Everyone,I was wondering, I'm using .025 wire with a 75/25 gas mixture and was wondering,, when I increase the Argon CFMs what exactly does that do to the weld? I know it makes it almost impossible to ge the weld down. But why would you want a 35 CFM setting? Just curios.MP.Weld-Pak 100 Mig. New to welding and melting anything metal
Reply:It wastes gas and sometimes the high flow causes turbulence and drags in the surrounding air.  You end up with porosity when you were trying to prevent it,
Reply:Hey satex, you got that truck on the road yet????
Reply:gas in general just acts as a protective shield that covers you weld pool and keeps out the impurities in the air. You only need to have enough to keep out the impurities the suggested cfm is what you should have set. It does not help to crank up the cfm under normal welding conditions. One exception is that if you are welding near wind that may be blowing your gas for example near the bay door or outside. In this case cranking up the cfm will counter the wind in some cases. This is just letting more gas flow out and will make your cylinder run out faster. I increase gas when wind is a problem after I have tried every thing else like shutting the door or moving away from the wind. If you would like to see what the shielding gas does or is for just run a test pass without the gas turned on. You will see a pin holed pattern that resembles a honeycomb and this is what I have always heard this called "honeycombing". Really the gas just takes the place of the flux that covers your stick rod.

Reply:Sandy, Hey, I'm about to wrap it up.
Reply:OK Sandy,Question. Once I have done a butt weld of two pieces of metal and ground down the line, the weld line is invisible and I mean Invisible. The small hairline crack that was between the two pieces of metal I welded is now filled with the melted wire. Considering you have good penetration your once two pieces of metal, can now be considered "One"? Or is the two pieces still considered separate "Just Welded together" for safety reasons.Oh, by the way, I'm getting dangerous with that welder and a 60 grit flag disc. In fact I'm going back and re-welding some of those "Ugly" welds from the beginning.   Weld-Pak 100 Mig. New to welding and melting anything metal

Reply:Sandy , what I realized was in the begining I  had not put together how I was going to get the steel looking like the new thing but once I started working those welds and got a little bit braver on my welds and grinding. It just all clicked. Now When I'm welding I'm looking for puddle movement and pentration knowing I'm coming around with a grinder right after that. Oh did I say "Puddle Movement". Forgot to mention with the Gas sheild it is much easier to drop a weld bead down your shirt than before. eeeeeeeeeyoooooowwww...  In fact I'm getting a really nice toolbox and welding on some of those really nice tires to make that thing mobile.....Did I say weld......... eeeeeeyyyyeeeewwwwwWeld-Pak 100 Mig. I'm waiting for the weather here in sa to dry up so I put some paint on her. But finally got her on the road and it runs better than I could have thought. MP
Reply:Hey Sandy, well the truck is all  done, I want to say thank you for all your support and help on this project there is no way I could have done this without this boards support. Here's a few pictures of the completed and painted project, which I did the painting myselfhttp://community.webshots.com/album/...GPXrg?start=96Weld-Pak 100 Mig.
