I have only been around a few times when sub's get their welds X rayed, and I have noticed that the distance that people have to stay away vary's from time to time. Today they had the exclusion zone about 100+ feet away and some times, people are 10 feet away.Does it depend on the thickness of the metal ( strength of the x ray current) or is it always hazardous?Just wondering.
Reply:I depends on the radiation source.  Often operators will set up heavy steel plate barriers to protect staff at the other end of the building or as you mentioned everyone has to leave the area.  Higher level radiation requires less exposure time on the film.  The thickness of the material will demand longer exposure times or a stronger source.  The operator has to be very careful.  He carries a badge that measures the cumulative amount of radiation he absorbs.  That badge ( dosimeter) is turned in regularly and if he takes too large a dose he is out of work.
Reply:Also how new the pill is in the machine.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
