I don't have a plasma cutter or OA rig. I've heard that it is possible to cut with a stick welder. Does it require a special type of stick? As far as weapons are concerned I'm aware of a special use munition called a "thermite" charge. The weapon is activated and it melts everything near it. Is there a stick that works in a similar fashion??I appreciate any help.*Rick*Having just enough knowledge to be dangerous!
Reply:That was the "hot topic" last week..Check it out..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=14926...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thank you!I have so much to learn...*Rick*Having just enough knowledge to be dangerous!
Reply:Thanks for the link zapster.  Rick, I learned by mistake I can easily cut 3/8" with 6011 (Ihave an AC only box) at 125-150 amps.  I haven't heard about wetting it though, I'll give that a try.  Maybe that will make my cuts cleaner.
Reply:hhhmmmm....... Broco rods. We use broco rods to burn underwater( you can use them topsided too.) Its basically a hollow steel tube lined with small magnesium rods, but hollow down the center. Requires special torch head similiar to a air-arc setup. Instead of compressed air uses regulator off of 100% o2. Strike an arc just like your welding, but when you pull the trigger the o2 supports a "flame" and the magnesium rods burn/ blow away anything your cutting. Let go of the trigger and the "flame" goes out. Broco is just a namebrand that I mostly see used around hear, I know there are other manufacturers...oh yeah..dont be between the stinger and the ground when you have topside throw the knifeswitch to make it hot, that would be bad
Reply:nope, brocos don't use magnesium, its a steel tube, with steel rods.  the red end has something to do with it marking the end that was folded and crimped in each rod.  if they were using magnesium, it would continue to burn even after you let off the trigger.  we use alot of oxylance rods which are also exothermic, but instead of rods inside, it is a series of concentric tubes.
Reply:Arcair makes a 'Slice" rod I use to burn out the center of pins and stuff.  Probably the same as the rest.  They told me in college you could stuff steel wool in a brake line and it would work the same.  I think it would.  The steel wool keeps it burning.  It needs pure O2.The slice rods will burn a blind hole through any thickness.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:thats just great now i got to get one ,but its $500.00 just for the torchChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:You don't need a torch, just hook a hose from  your O2 to the rod.  Ground your work, hot to the rod.  Once you make a spark, it will burn on its own.  You can start the arc with a car battery.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:SWEET!!! now i got to get some of the rod and try it outChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
