With the exception of the high $$$ helmets with fans in them what's your trick to keep the lens from fogging up when working in high humidity areas?
Reply:A fan at your back can help or try dive shops - they sell an anti fog for diving masks (usually divers spit in their masks) - I doubt you wanna spit in your welding helmet Fire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG
Reply:I wear a respirator that directs my breath downwards.See:Jeez my leathers looked in good condition there! I just bought a new pair that week.  Sweet.    They are black now!
Reply:toothpaste.  if you get the kind that's clear, or more clear even if its red or blue.  make sense?  it works for dive masks, never tried it on a welding shield, guess you could try rain-x too.
Reply:oops, forgot to say that you have to rub it in.  just showing the mask the toothpaste won't work.
Reply:If your breath is causing it,try to concentrate on breathing thru your nose. It helps create a downdraft pulling cooler air over the lense.                                     MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I'll might try the rain-x or the toothpaste for a minty freash helmet. I think the biggest problem is that my new auto darkening helmet fits way too close to my face and persperation is fogging it. I don't have the problem with my old stand by helmet.
Reply:baby shampoo , rub it on with your finger and let dry then wipe it down with a soft cloth. works great for my sons hockey helmet face shield.
Reply:I also heard and tried WD40 and this work pretty good, just pull out the first lense in your hood and spray it down and let it sit for a few minutes then whipe it down and let sit and dry, then put all back together and shuold work for about 40 days then do it again. work inside and outside...Old PIpeFitters never Die, their rods get shorter and the gaps get wider!!!

Reply:If the problem is that the helmet fits too close to your face, try adjusting it back.  There should be an adjustment on the headband about where it attaches to the side screws that will put the helmet closer or further from your face.  There will be a tab with 3 or 4 holes and a little pin...that it the adjustment that I am talking about.
Reply:I am new to welding but as an avid scuba diver I will say, NEVER use Rain-X.  The residue will cause burning/tearing in your eyes if you don't get every bit out.  Also, Rain-X will permenantly fog some plastics (if you have an auto-dark lens).  Rain-X is a solution of dilute sulfuric acid and polysiloxane (silicone oil) in alcohol.  Not good for eyes.Of course a welding helmet is not a sealed environment like a dive mask but there are too many other things that work well, why bother with Rain X.Toothpaste, baby shampoo and dish detergent are all good.  If you want to spend a few bucks at a local dive shop ($6 or so for a 1oz bottle), SeaGold or PSI500 work great but would be overkill in my opinion.Last edited by ecrouse; 10-06-2007 at 09:15 PM.
Reply:Thanks for the heads up about the rain-x being hard on the eyes. It's low on the priority list because I can always use my old lincoln big window helmet and I have a lot of non welding work to get done. i was thinking about trying to rig up a small cpu fan, like we used to use on old 486 computers, some where in the helmet just to keep some air moving across the lens. It should start cooling down around here soon so I'll have several months to work out the details.
Reply:Huh?My mask never fogs up Sometimes all you need is a couple of "heavy breaths" inside then the wipedown..In the cold if you can..Put the glass under hot water for about 10 seconds..Wipe and weld......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
