Been looking around for a micro sized torch to start my welding life. I have seen uniwelds artorch and smiths micro torch as well as a few other less nice looking torches. There was also this one http://www.nichegas.com/minitorches.htmland the gentech small torch.I am a newb to all things oxy/fuel welding and would be using this torch for precision soldering/welding/brazing/cutting sheet metal. I have a disease that requires I buy well recommended and trustworthy brands, I operate under the buy cheap buy twice rule.Input is appreciated thanks.
Reply:What's the plan?Sheetmetal, how thick?Just precision light bench work, or bigger projects too?Last edited by denrep; 10-13-2007 at 08:30 PM.
Reply:I'm gonna start with light precision bench work, bigger projects will come later when I can invest in some 100CuFT O2 bottles and large Mapp bottles.and metal under 12 gauge I think. Mostly worried about welding brazing and soldering, I can cut stuff with the dremel or a saw.
Reply:Since you're talking about bigger projects later, this sounds like it could be a stepping stone. Also you don't like to buy twice.I would steer you toward a conventional torch set, with interchangeable heads. Buy a major brand in a smaller size, it will be good now and later. I think you can buy this more versatile tool, for the same or less money than the micro set-up.Forage around a bit, and you can find a deal on cylinders too.Good Luck
Reply:I completely agree Denrep. With the simplicity of a few assorted tips, you will have a very, very versatile torch! Everything is upgradable in stages, bottles, torch bodies, everything.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Sounds like some pretty sound advice what is a well respected brand for oxy/fuel rigs? I heard that dual diaphragm regulators are better for smooth output (probably a good idea for a small tip size right?)Thanks for the input so far.
Reply:You can't go wrong with Victor. Smith is my next choice. Cutmaster makes a good unit that uses the same tips as one of the above,at a lower cost for torch. I wouldn't waste my time with the mini-bottles. They will just need changing more often. If cost is a big thing, maybe 2 pair of the smaller bottles. And I would go ahead and go with O/A over mapp or propane. The heat is not there in the latter 2.  I am no expert, but that is my opinion.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:Mapp burns plenty hot I'll stick with Mapp unless there are others that think it's lacking, it has better heat output so it should solder and braze, but welding will be another story.

Reply:Buy cheap with O/A equipment and it might be your purchase.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:you mean last? But aside from that, what would you guys recommend in the standard heavy duty category for Oxy/Mapp which is my first choice if I can find a regulator that would go high enough 15 psi isn't enough for mapp I think. Looking mostly for welding mild stuff brazing and same as before and not much in the way of cutting. Someone recommended Victor there stuff seems nice.Last edited by 65535; 10-14-2007 at 09:54 PM.
Reply:Victor has several sets with Fuel Gas regulators in them.  Heavy Duty Regulator is SR-561B-510 should be in any kit you buy.  John  Thanks for Last.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
