Can anyone help with some old cast iron NEW YORK CITY lamp post. I have 8 of them and I have to do some welding on the top of them. I am not sure of the kind of iron they are made of and how they should be welded. Thanks,
Reply:BRAIZE them.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Sound advice you could ruin them trying to figure out what rod or wire to use.
Reply:Yes as david said braze them. It's one of the best ways to repair cast.
Reply:I was just down at Repair Days, in Memphis, at the National Metals Museum. And a lot of cast iron came in, broken.I was one of a couple of tig welders there, as most of the people volunteering were either blacksmiths, jewelers, or metalsmiths. So I tigged a lot of oddball cast iron.Me, I like a nickel rod. It gives a nice strong weld, sticks to most recipes of cast iron, and is pretty easy to tig.It also is available in a stick rod, if the cast iron is big enough to merit stick welding.I have also done a lot of cast iron repair using silicon bronze filler rod, and tig brazing it. This works well, especially on small delicate stuff, but I dont think it is as strong as the nickel rod is.The nickel rod is fiendishly expensive, but, hey, if it was easy, everybody would be doing it. |
