These are from after my 1st official day of stick welding in school. Before this I have only minimal practice mainly striking an arc to get ready for school so I wouldn't stick too many rods. With watching my instructor run a bead and lil practice, I think I have a good feel for it. Using 1/8" 6013 rod set at 90amps on Lincoln AC225. Any input or advice is appreciated as I will be taking a D1.1 vertical up test to certify at end of schooling. Thx. Plate 1: I basically just kept running beads over beads, overlapping.[IMG][/IMG] Plate 2:[IMG][/IMG]
Reply:Looks good.  The second picture is the same piece as the first with additional beads. What size material?Really good Job.
Reply:cant see a problem with them beads mate , good job
Reply:I can see you get better as you go!
Reply:those are 2 seperate plates, about 3/16" to 1/4", I think I am ready to start some butt welds with some different techniques, i am going to spend alot of time with the stick being that is what the test will be with. I plan on getting some input with the MIG and learning the basics of TIG. I hope to certify and land a decent job which I can gain alot of experience. I would like to possibly become a pipe welder in the future.
Reply:looks pretty decent but after you get a little feel for going left to right, practice going the other way on every other pass. Then practice with one hand. Then practice the same thing with your other hand.
Reply:Looks  good Addicted2Fusion, but if your wanting to maybe be a pipewelder wouldnt you rather practice for 6G? Have you done any open root plate flat vertical overhead yet?
Reply:If you can lay a a good looking bead with a 6010 rod, which takes alot of rod my friend let me tell you, also the machine to, you might have a chance at welding some pipelines, throw your certs out the window and you will weld in front of them and the test basically consist of theis..  12 on 12 branch, 12 on 12 butt and welding uphill with hydrogen... Yeah nice to have all those cert and stuff but my opinion, those are good for structual welders and shop, won't really need them out here... You pass a stress test and a X-ray your good to go, sounds simple but the one inspecting you welding is a real hard A$$ and depending where you live also, I am certified to weld all across the central stale from texas to wyoming....Old PIpeFitters never Die, their rods get shorter and the gaps get wider!!!
Reply:I will probably be getting a shop/structural job to start out with and gain some experince for a few years. I don't think i'd be jumping into pipe right away. I have lots to learn.
