My welder blew up

I had just been welding with a diesel welding generator when It blew up. Lucky I was having a number 2 in the toilet at the time.I have NO idea what caused it, but work will be looking into it!Any ideas guys?

Reply:Some numb-nut put gasoline in the tank for you?Usually, stationary equipment never loses an engine unless it wasn't maintained (water, oil, wrong fuel, blown hose or belt).
Reply:did it blow up as in a "violent explosion" ( )kind of way with shrapnel, screaming children, dead furry animals, and fireballs, or was it just that is topped working  ? the explosion possibility sounds like the fuel tank overheated, built up too much pressure and went "poof ". i don't know how this would have happened, but i doubt that a small leak would have caused death, destructon, and mayhem on such a large scale. if it just stopped working, i would think that it was not properly maintained. I don't know anything about engine-powered welders, but if they are anything like car engines, i would look into the fuel type, coolant level, oil level/type, etc. note: gas and disel engines use different type oils ("C" vs. "D"). also, maybe the valves got stuck? if the exhasut valve was broken or stuck shut for some reason (again, i don't know how, but it is a possibility), the pressure could increase past the physical abilities of the engine(BOOM!!! ), and either explode, or start to give back-fires. these back fires may have caused over heating of some critical part of the engine and made it go "boom". do you have any pictures? those might help give us a better understanding of what all went wrong. plus, i think it'd be kind of informative to know what can happen if something goes wrong with an awnrey (spelling?) engine-powered welder.hope that helps.later,Andy
Reply:More detail needed, but with a diesel, one of the most common failure modes is the governor hanging up. Engine runs away and either loses rods, or what's attached to it lets go from the overspeed.
Reply:new thought... was the unit clean? was there excessive dust/dirt/mouse dropping build-up inside the unit that could cause possible over-heating issues? the dust may ahve turned into sludge that could cause a cable or two to not function properly. i can definately see the whole governor situation playing thru also.later,Andy
