I have another post on here that some of you read about a Hobart Stickmate welder I bought off ebay. It had been damaged in shipping. There is a big dent on the right top corner. Some thought they wouldn't have chanced it. Some others thought it was a good bye. Well today the Welder came in. I unpackaged it from the original Hobart Box, I put it together (cables and such) Then ready to try to strike an Arc. With hope, I flipped the on switch and if fired right up. The fan was running very well. I then took some metal scrap and fired up the old 6011. With anticipation I went to strike the ark to run a bead, and guess What? It started great and ran a nice bead. Thats how it has worked out so far. What do you think. All and to remind you that I bought it with that dent for $141.00 It is also brand new and had never been used. Just returned to the seller after seeing the dent when he opened it up.Brian
Reply:wow, thats great. I'm glad it worked out for you. You stole that thing "Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for thee" - Bender
Reply:An employee at Canadian Tire told me that scratch and dent deliveries are taken out back and axed to render them totally worthless and then dumpstered. He said it was cheaper to do this than return items. He mentioned a $300 compressor with cosmetic damage that received this treatment that very day.Urban myth?I have seen a yard sale that had many tools that originated from Sears- all of them with day-glo orange spray paint on them.A man who can't weld is as poorly educated as a woman who can't sew
Reply:Congratulations!Almost all of my prized tools and machines are from salvage/auction/surplus. You can get great bargains or get screwed, but on balance, this strategy has worked out beautifully for me. I simply can't justify purchase of new equipment for my hobby use, but I can easily justify taking a flyer on an item that MAY work perfectly (like yours and many of mine) or that I think I can repair, if necessary. At a minimum, I will get an education out of researching repair of a piece of equipment.Good work!awright |
