I am new to this forum, so please go lightly on me.I have my own business in South Africa, doing mainly tig welding on tool steel moulds for the plastic industry. For the past 20 years I have been using a  Miller syncroware 300. A few months ago I bought an ac/dc Fronius inverter with footcontrol.Fronius makes a add-on plasma unit, which I want to get. It will be use manually. Problem is I am buying this machine by a photo. There is no way I can test it or even get to see or use a plasma welder to be able to see what it can do. I have read everything I can get hold of and know it can do the job....BUT, the lowest the Fronius goes is 3 amps.I am worried that 3 amps is maybe too high in plasma for very small inserts or mould edge welding as plasma is a lot hotter than tig.....PLEASE is there anybody who has experience with manual plasma welding, who could help with my questions. The local welding reps, are a lot worst than "honest Joe 2nd hand car sales" and really don`t know what they talking about. THANX, Clive
Reply:Is this transferred or non transferred arc. Non transferred usually ranges from amperage between .1 and 10 amps. --Gol'
Reply:Heat can be controled by the electrical stick out, which has very little effect on the amperage, but non-transfered arc is the best for thin and small parts, because the arc is never transfered to the piece being welded ( almost like O/A welding without all the heat).   John G.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Plasma welding? New one on me. Like to know a little more about that. Whats the advantage over TIG?
Reply:A more constrated arc (consentric) and ESO has very little efect on the heat of the puddle.  Deeper penetration, easier control of the welding arc and puddle.  Cost a lot more, don't know why, because it is a vairation of the TIG process.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:I have been a tool and die welder for 15 years and use a synchrowave 351. This machine is good. I have never used or seen  plasma welding. One shop had  a laser welder and we also had microscopes with a small tig machine cappable of very low amprage.  If you can post a link to plasma welding I would be interested in researching this method.Good luck.
Reply:THANX, weldgault and Go1lum for the replies.  It be transferred arc. I bought the machine and should get in in a few weeks time. Once up and running I will report back.THANX
