What Welding Certification needed for Structural Ironworking

I was accepted into an apprenticeship program at my Local Union hall for Structural Iron working but classes aren't starting for a while.  I want to find a job for a company in the mean time but I have no experience.  I thought it would help to take a class to learn how to weld to offer the company something.  Can someone please tell me where I could go to learn how to weld and what kind of welding I would need to get a certificate in?  Thanks for your help.  I live in SE Michigan by the way.  Thanks again. Reply:Goals that come to mind, learn to cut with a torch and learn to stick weld with E7018 and learn to run Flux Cored wire and learn to Air Carbon Arc gouge.When it comes time to test for your certificate, you will probably want to test in the vertical and overhead positions, that being said, practice vertical the more.Last edited by tanglediver; 12-07-2007 at 02:15 PM.City of L.A. Reply:for structural steel welding the main processes are:shop = fcaw-g 80%, gmaw(er70s or c -3 or 6 10%, smaw (7018) 10%field = fcaw-ss 90%, smaw (6010 and 7018) 10%
Reply:You will most likely be using 6010 and 7018 the most. If you are starting an apprenticeship program, don't go and get a non union job for a competing company. The union will throw you fast if they find out.Bill
