Welder humor

I went to a interview for a job at a local welding shop today and they wanted me to do a simple MIG bead on some square tubing, ok no problem so it was about 8'' long and the guy said just do it in one pass, ok. So I start and half way thought I hear this super loud bang, like a sledge hammer hitting the table. I didn't jump, which apperintly was a good thing because I got the job!  He said he does that to all his new people to make sure that they are good people or something like that. So now I have a job, its sweeping floors and cleaning up and changing wire etc but he said after a while I can get a torch in my hand and move on up.

Reply:Could have been worse....The shop I was at in '05, the foreman scared the crap out of a couple of new guys by leaning in and spraying a good shot of ether into their weld zone.Juvenile....Yes.  Damn Funny..... Yes.  Really glad it wasn't me....YES. Nice tool though to correct excessive arrogance when the whole shop gets to hear the tuff guy scream like a little girl.The guys were really jumpy for the next week or two.Later,Jason

Reply:That welding test is administered at our company on a regular basis. Not to new guys but we do it to eachother quite a bit. keeps ya steady lol!the only down side is sometimes a tack breaks and you think its one of your buddies messin with ya so ya just keep going.

Reply:Sounds like a way to separate the guys who want the job from the ones that would save a few lives if the shop roof had caved in.Personally I would have hired the newbe who stopped welding , flipped up his helmet and yelped-"WHAT THE H____"But if I already decided on hiring of someone to sweep the floors- I agree a joke is a good way to get a little camaraderie going.
Reply:I cant weld good, and I don't want to be welding on some steam pipes, and then they burst or something like that. I am doing this because I love to weld, not just for the check, its a added bonus. I love what I do, even tho its laboring you have to start somewhere.
