I've been looking at these combo units and just wonder:  What is the real advantages of getting a 50amp 160/180  vs. the 40 amp 140/160 ??I'm planning on just using this as a hobby type unit.  I've seen some mention of a gas regulator, this is for the TIG (I think, excuse my ignorance).  Can TIG be done using flux core wire?Thats all for now, Thanks in advance,Patrick
Reply:The higher the number, the better penetration into the metal. Think, more power. Tig or GTAW welding uses standard un-coated wire. Flux core wire is for FCAW welding or MIG without the gas.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:So TIG = no gas needed?  Correct? But plasma cutting needs air pressure?I've done some stick welding, and a very little MIG (I guess).I even have a small stick welder, but realy seem to have trouble with it.  It just isn't "fine" enough for some of the work I want to do.Thanks again,Patrick
Reply:Welcome. No, TIG still needs gas but it doesn't use flux wire. You asked about flux wire. Yes, plasma uses either clean and dry air from your air compressor OR you can buy a bottle of Nitrogen from your LWS.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Oh, ok.  Sorry I just have no idea about this stuff....John, I was asking if TIG could use flux core instead of gas.I'll call my local place here and see how much that would cost.  Does it ever go "bad" or anything?  No more welding that I'm planning on doing, I don't know how much I'd need at a time. (Argon I mean)Any other "duh" things that I might be missing??Thanks, Patrick
Reply:No problem, I was just more or less redirecting the question. Sometimes people post such a vague or general question, that there are possibly a hundred answer. Being more specific helps.  No - the gas nor the wire goes bad. If the wire does sit for say, 6 months, you may want to wipe it down with acetone...as you should every time prior to TIG welding. If you have any other questions, just ask. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I'm looking on ebay at Giant Tech Sales stuff. If I'm looking at say this item:   230198489827vs.  this:  220185215048    ??Thanks for answering all my questions, and so quickly!  ha ha....the wonders of the internet.Patrick
Reply:Get as big a unit as you can afford. Limiting yourself to a certain size material...is...well, limiting. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:OK.  This is my Christmas/Birthday (January 3rd) present.  What thickness can a 40a vs. 50a cutter cut?Isn't an AC/DC machine "better" ?  (Holds a better arc or something I seem to remember way back in the recesses of my mind....)
Reply:I can't figure out how to edit my previous post.....What is a foot pedal helpful for? Also, on "consumables"  what is this referring too, and how fast do I use them up?Thanks again,Patrick
Reply:Suggest you spend some time at this website where you can read well written, illustrated basic information about the different types of welding and associated equipment that will answer most of your questions.spendhttp://www.millerwelds.com/education/bookspamphlets.htmlTeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:Patrick,Try calling your local library and ask if they have VCR tapes on welding, specifically TIG and MIG. If they don't have them locally, they can problablyorder them for you. Don't forget to check out what books are available too.Merry Christmas and Good Luck,Don
Reply:The foot pedal is used in TIG welding to vary the weld amperage as you weld.   You can make the arc hotter by pushing down more on the foot pedal.  At the end of the weld, you want to back off the power slowly so you dont get a bubble or crater where you stop the weld.AC output is used in TIG welding to weld aluminum.   It is also used in stick welding sometimes.   MIG, Flux-core wire-feed, TIG on steel, and most stick welding is done in DC.My 27 amp plasma cutter cuts 1/4" steel nicely.   A 40 amp should be able to cut 1/2".    Most plasma cutters need 90 psi air pressure, but the most limiting factor in air supply with most compressors is the air flow, in cfm.   Mine needs minimum 6 cfm and cuts nicer/faster with more air.   With insufficient air flow, you end up cutting a little bit, then waiting for the compressor to catch up before you can cut again.   The bigger the compressor pump, the better.   Compressors are often over-rated in advertising of their air flow ability, as are inexpensive plasma cutters of their cut thicknesses and speeds.Consumables are things like contact tips and gas nozzles for the mig gun, mig wire, tig filler rod, tips and nozzles for the plasma gun, tig tungsten electrodes, gas cups for the tig torch, basicly anything you 'use up' in the course of using the equipment and performing the work.   Always have an extra tip for your mig gun, cause once you burn the wire back into the tip bad enough that it welds itself to the inside end of the tip, you're done welding untill you can put in a new tip.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
