What type of steel do you guys use? I was looking at 1018 steel and it is EXPENSIVE. I just wanted to make a welding table and I am roughly calculating around 1000 to make a welding table..Am I using the right steel or not?
Reply:Regular old mild steel will be fine for a table.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:A36 hotroll if buying new or online. Checkout any recyclers/scrapyards in your area.  Steel building or roofing contractors are a good source of scrap C-channel and I-beam pieces.

Reply:Looser finish tolerances, heavier mill scale, slight difference in mechanical properties from the cold working of the cold rolled.  Absolutely no reason not to use it in this application, or most general fabrication for that matter, and I've seen it priced as low as half of cold rolled.
Reply:Like supe said metallurgically they're about the same. Most cold rolled steels are harder/stronger from the processing they receive during manufacture.   In welding/fab tables I go for mass.  More steel for same money = more mass.Anything can be fabricated on-site. Truth is fabricated online.
