I am going to an open interview today for an apprentice job. What do they usually require for an apprentice? Open interviews for pipe fitters, combo pipe welders, and apprentices.
Reply:Math skills, literacy, and a can do attitude.Jimmy
Reply:That's it. I got plenty of that. LOL. So a lil experience already should go a long ways. I need to go impress them then with my eagerness. Hell, i'd work for halfway nothing lol just to learn. I won't tell them that though.
Reply:They may require something of you, like a time commitment after you complete training.  What type company is it?  Good luck
Reply:Well I went to the interview. He said 90percent of people who came were for the apprentice position. He said he had to go back and meet with someone higher up and select some for a 2nd interview. I got my point across that I was very eager to learn anyways because he said "looks like you really want to be a welder" lol. That is all I can do I guess.
Reply:Well, I got a call this morning for a 2nd interview. Secretary asked if I had valid drivers liscense and if I had any pts. because I would be driving a company truck. It is looking good so far. Wish me luck. It is a mechanical contractor company. I guess they do everything. What duties does an apprentice usually do and how do they go about training you? Just when they got time or what? Pay isn't the greatest but I can't afford to go to school and I really want to learn so I figure I can't go wrong. They also own a pipe welding school in Cincinnatti. I figure if I work my *** off, it will pay off somehow in the long run.
Reply:If you'll be driving a company truck as a new apprentice I'd guess your duties will start as a gofer.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:LOL, yeah I knew there would be plenty of that. Hey atleast I got 1st dibs on donuts. How does an apprenticeship usually work? You work so long then get hired if they like you etc? I'm used to being a gofer anyways. LOL. Probably be a while before I get any formal training? It's all good though I don't expect anything overnight.
Reply:Have you talked to any Union Reps during the process of getting this job ?? If you haven't, and it doesn't sound like you have, it would be a company job and as for hiring practices it varies from company to company.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:After 24 years in the trades I can tell you this is what most people are dying to see in young entry level workers:1)  Ability to pass a drug test2)  Shows up for work every day.3)  Shows up ON TIME.4)  Shows up dressed properly for the workplace.5)  Shows an interest in learning the trade.6)  Able and willing to work hard.7)  Doesn't want to play with his/her cell phone all day texting/calling family/friends.Sounds simple, but those few traits will make you golden to an employer.JTMcC
Reply:Hey Addicted,I'll just add a bit to JT's suggestions:8) ALWAYS be conscious of SAFETY!!!! No "horseplay"!9) Listen to those around you....you will find, hopefully, a few who will provide valuable information to help you and will give you sound advice.10) Keep your personal life VERY personal. If you get the job, remember that they are taking a chance with you.... prove you are a worthy employee.... it will benefit you in the long run....be mindful of honor and respect. Good Luck....   DennyHey JTMcc: How you doing bro' ? Haven't seen you around in a while. Hope all is well with you...... DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Sounds just like me LOL. I am and have always been drug free. Don't even hardly drink except for certain occasions. I was raised to be respectful and mannerly and I don't mind busting my *** and actually enjoy heavy labor and lifting. The guy interviewing me already knew I had a desire to become a welder. I'll let you guys know what I find out at 2nd interview tomorrow. It is with the same guy. I am thinking he already has us picked out.
Reply:I cant agree more with what JTMcC and yorkiepap said Addicted2Fusion.You has obviously impressed them enough for a second interview , one thing that can sway a decision between two equal candidates is the way you speak. So many young blokes today mumble , I probably did when younger but it is something as you get older you leave behind and your interviewer will be older.Often it isn't that you are slovenly or unmotivated , it is a habit you may not be aware you are doing, particularly if your mates do as well ...my son is that way .Yes, not yeah or 'spose. No um or arhhs.Clear and concise , whilst the choosing of an apprentice shouldn't be on this basis people are human and it will influence an interviewer.Good Luck!A good guess is better than a bad measurement
