Reply:Draw a line with soapstone.Make sure you have the right shade helmet for your eyes.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Sometimes I'll place a piece of flat stock next to where I'm going to weld as a reference if I'm having trouble seeing exactly where I need to weld.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Thanks, that sounds like a real good idea, I will try it next time I weld.
Reply:The reason you are having welding problems welding in a straight line becauseyou need a guide. When you try to just make welds on a flat plate it is not a "normal" situation. It is better to weld a "T" joint or a butt weld with a slight "V" groove and the you would not have trouble. If you do not want to make a proper welding coupon you could draw a line on the plate with welders chalk and that will help you.But i still reccommend welding a joint and not just a flat plate because the the weld profile will look right and give you a better idea about the quality of your weld if you weld a joint. Also you can get magnifyers to fit in your welding helmet that really help you out. And that goes for younger guys too. Once you use a magnifier it is just a lot easier to see what is really taking place.
Reply:Thanks for the good advice
Reply:when looking at the puddle, can you also see a half inch or so of the un-welded joint ahead? If not, your helmet is probably too dark.
Reply:It all comes down to a thing called practice, practice, practice, and the proper shade lens doesn't hurt. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist. |
