Mig test?

I am thinking about going and applying for a job. It is a MIG job. Must take and pass an AWS test. What is the most common MIG test? Position, thickness, etc.
Reply:I took the 3G.  Vertical up groove weld.  Pretty easy if you practice and get your settings right on.  It depends on what you will be welding and what test they want you to take.Plate was 3/8", 22.5* bevel on each side for a 45* included angle.  1/4" backer, root gap up to 1/4".DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have heard that it is easy. I have heard that they have someone that sets the welder up and everything lol. I just want to get into a welding job and get some experience. So you just run stringer beads, how many passes, did you have to do a cover pass? I think someone said it was flat and horizontal. This was before the company merged but I think it is pretty much same. I am thinking about going to apply and take test next week.
Reply:PRACTICE.  No one set the welder for me.  I used my own equipment.  I even had to supply the material.  This was an AWS test.  I weaved 3 beads.  .045 wire and Co2.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:It could be any of the scenarios you described, I had pretty much made up my mind to find a new job in mid-December. I took 11 tests at different places.Some places were very formal, after passing a written test I was taken to an area just for testing, given several pieces of nice clean material all sheared to the same size, already beveled. Machine would be off, gas was off. turn it on set it up and weld.Some places just give you some scrap and tell ya to lay some beads.I usually rule them outThe place I just left was huge, couple hundred guys during the day. They give you the plate tell you what voltage and wire speed to run. The CWI will stand there and tell you what to do. They needed people! But they would give you a general test to see if you knew what was goin on, hire youand then have you take the AWS tests.But like David said no matter what you do, practice alot. Can you read prints? Is there any kind of written test? A solid performance on a written test is important. The people in the office usually see that. If its neatly done and correct, that goes a long way.When you show up there, even if they will set the machine for you, you gotta wow 'em. Ask the right questions and show 'em you now your stuff and that you wanna learn even more.You'll do fine!
Reply:Yeah, I have been practicing as much as I can. I have improved my mig welding. I don't really know what the test is. If anyone from around my area is on here. It is SFI of Ohio LLC, used to be M&J Industries. I think I am going to go take it next week. My problem is I need MORE scrap to practice on. LOL.
