I recently was able to salvage some 2" square tubing from a universal exercise machine. It is chrome plated. Besides grinding off the chrome finish, and keeping out of the fumes, what other steps are needed to weld this stuff. Thanks:Walt
Reply:Probably not much.  I've done several pieces lately which were chrome plated.  I prepped them with nothing more than a 4 1/2" grinder equipped with a 120 grit sanding disk.  I used 6013 stick and Mig with steel wire.  I really doubt all the chrome was entirely removed but I could see no ill effects in any of the welds.  This was a steel alloy motorcycle fender I shortened with a rounded end.  I welded a 1/8" SS wire along the back edge to soften the sharpness and two 1/4" curved SS rods to function as struts.   All the welds welded normally and they all appear fine.  Hope this helps!
Reply:Chrome is not a problem. Remember chromoly is strengthened by additonal chomium. But if the joint is prepared properly there won't be much chrome in the joint anyway.
Reply:Yeah, that's what I was trying to say.
Reply:Thanks for your replies. You confirmed what I had thought.Walt
