I need some help on what size setup for this area of welding i need. The current setup for the torch in that picture is 3/32 collet, collet body, tungsten, and a number 6 nozzle (3/8)This is a pta-17 torch wp-17 air cooled tig torch.im thinking that having a 1/16 collet, collet body, tungsten, and a number 5 (long or short?) nozzle (5/16) might work like in this picture? http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=918I kind of want to know what to get first before buying, dont want to waste my money.I tryed sticking my tungsten out, but its to far out to where the gas will not shield it.Anyone know a way for me to get this? setup?thanks, brentLast edited by disepyon; 02-12-2008 at 03:48 PM.
Reply:There are a lot of options:Gas lens may help (comes as a set that replaces several parts of the torch. A screen inside the torch smooths the flow by creating small scale turbulence that decays out by the time the gas gets to the end of the cup, allowing for the shield to stay laminar farther from the cup end) Not the cheappest solution, but quite effective.Putting shields to either side of the weld area to help trap the gas can help a lotCAREFULLY grinding into the cup at an angle on the top and bottom so the cup itself fits deeper into the joint area. The cups are brittle, so this can be a challenge. If done it a few times with a diamond blade, as well as with a tool grinder with a fine wheel.Insuring that there is no breeze at all in the area will help with coverage. Cranking up the gas flow will help in many circumstances. This can hurt you if you arn't careful, as the increased gas velocity can venturi in air.A second gas line into the joint area, with a little baffling to help keep it there. My first choice would be baffling to reduce/eliminate drafts, extend the tungsten, and turn up the flow.Last edited by enlpck; 02-12-2008 at 04:42 PM.
Reply:ill see what i can do about that, thanks alot.Would a #5 nozzle for a 1/16 be any smaller than a #6 nozzle for a 3/32? would it help my chances to get closer or would it be the same where im at now?
Reply:Myself..I'd get a gas lenz..I really don't see a problem with the "angle of the dangle"..If your gonna do alot of this figure out your plan of attack and practice a bit..One day you'll find yourself all wrapped around a cage and be happy you'll know what you'll need right off the bat..But again there is always the stick welder......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:A #4 Long Lava will get you closer to keep the heat down on the tungsten and an extra purge hose set lightly will get you a little extra argon on the spot. After you've done a bunch you'll quit using the extra purge hose.CLOSE UP THAT GAP !!Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:A #5 cup won't really help much. The cup gets in closer, but the smaller opening provides a smaller coverage regeion. The tungsten size really doesn't much matter here. In fact, the larger tungsten will handle the extension better. Lots of options, don't stress over it. As Zap said, a gas lens will help. I wouldn't bother, myself, as the angle isn't really that tight. Go in from the side with a longer extension. Tack a piece of scrap on first to reduce air coming in, if needed. Experiment. You will find a way.
Reply:You definitely will benefit from a gas lens.  Other than that, to get more tungsten stick out, you need a wider nozzle, not necessarily a longer one.You may want to look at something along the lines of the monster nozzle.-----------------------Carmen Electrodewww.CarmenElectrode.comand the boss blogs at  www.JoeWelder.comall powered by  www.Arc-Zone.com
Reply:With all the talk of gas lens and monster nozzles being so good maybe I'll have to try that sometime...never have had any before.Edit; I generally hold the torch with my dirty finger over the neck and the fingers on either side of the middle under the torch. My middle finger holds it and the other two run the torch. The long nozzle just gives me room to manipulte the torch holding in this manner.Last edited by olddad; 02-12-2008 at 05:50 PM.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:thanks for all the responses,So would i need something like this for the gas lens setup?http://cgi.ebay.com/TIG-gas-lens-set...QQcmdZViewItemany particular size you guys suggest?and about that gap, yay i am going to close that up, hehe.how far can i stick my tungsten out with this gas lens?
Reply:You could set up an auxillary gas nozzle to feed shield gas in from the side of the torch/joint.  I had to do this for some MIG welds where the gun could not get close enough because of the nozzle.  For the mig weld, I took the nozzle completly off to get the contact tip at the correct distance from the joint, then fed shield gas from the side through a gas lens and nozzle. Plug the electrode hole in the gas lens with a screw.  Get a helper to hold it for you, or set it up on a magnetic base.
Reply:mmmm to bad you don't have a plasma arc welder avialable. --Gol'
Reply:Like the others have said, you should be able to reach it by extending your tungsten.  You have a little more leeway when you are aiming into a tight corner.  A gas lense would be more assuring if you can get one  handily.  Their cost is cheap.  But in any case,  you got to get rid of that tack.  Pure porosity and it'll only get worse.  Probably have to use a hacksaw.
