I will be taking a CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) test in the 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on 3/8 thick steel plate 6 inch long. One side will me a fillet and the other side is a bevel and you must stop and start on each side on your root pass with (1/8) 7018 rod only. You can not use a grinder but you can use a wire wheel for a hand grinder. My question is how would you guys pick up the bead on the start? Would you start the electrode in front and tie in or start it on top of the bead moving fast(minimize build up) until you hit the stop?Anything will help, I hope you get what I am trying to ask. Thanks
Reply:i know the test you are talking about in welding school we practiced this alot and tested it, the best way from what i remember was dont fill in the crater on the end of the weld, let it leave you a deepspot to restart your weld or els you might leave a big lump that you wont get rid of after. acttuly i have a few more good tips for that. 1. make sure your pieces are flame cut and ground perfect, if you use the edge of the sheet or a part that was sheared off, it makes it harder and can leave a void where you are welding.2. use a soapstone for spaceing they are nice and square and half inch wide 3. start welding on the fillet side not the bevel side.4 leave the top edge to start your cap. 5 keep all your grindmarks and sanding marks the same direction. 6 dont drop your cupons in the water while you are cutting them, it quenches them, its bad7 after they are cut put a small chamfur on the edges it make it better for when you bend it, a quick swipe with a ginder will do i also forgot a tip for gougeing, gouge the sides of the strip that are not welded in first and then lay the peice horzontally and gouge straight down so you donot cut into the plate and fail from it.   good luckNothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Thanks for the tips, and feedback
Reply:To answer the question about the stop and start.  Yes leave the crater.  Start your arc 1/4" to 1/2" ahead of the crater.  Get the arc going and back into the crater.  Continue from there as if you had not stopped.Practice a little and you will be able to make it look nice. DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I do the same as David.
Reply:All right, thank you very much. I will practice that.
