i am using the 7014 for my pipe welding practice right now, and it seems to do ok. i would rather us the 7018, but i don't have a rod oven to store them in. it has been so long, i couldn't tell you how a 7018 would run compared to the 7014. so my question is, am i wasting my time and money by practicing with the 7014 on pipe? i may never get back into pipe welding , but i would like to know if i had to i could run a good bead. i know the 7014 puts down a lot of filler metal, so maybe that is part of my problem. sorry for the long redundant post. thanks. robert
Reply:Both 7014 and 7018 are iron powder rods so they put down a lot of metal compared to say 6011 or 6010. In my opinion 7018 runs better out of position than 7014. While you do some experience with each rod you plan to run no practice is wasted as long as you're doing your best.

Reply:If you do get into pipefitting, there is normally a procedure to follow and most of them call for 7018. 14 and 18 are some different. Get some 18, but do not stop practing. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:You probably have enough humidity in your part of the world to cause problems with 7018. For practice buy a 10# box of rod and a couple of 5# plastic rod storage tubes and put your rod in them. If you were going to test buy a new box of rod and open it when you start your test. 7018 is the rod to use on pipe.
Reply:most all carbon steel pipe welds are 6010 root and 7018 out. this is industry standard. the 7018 is the next most common technique
Reply:Some information for you.The numbers of the welding electrodes signify what position the rod works in.Also the type of coating. Nitrocellulose base.Check out the color of the slag. see what i mean?7018 welds vertical up, overhead and flat but downhill no more than 10º recommended. No iron powder. a medium penetration rod and x-ray quality.The 7014 is a all position rod but deposits more metal because it DOES have a rutile/iron powder filler. A medium penetration rod slag almost black and comes off mostly by itself.7024 is for welding in the flat position and is a rutile/iron powder filler and does deposit a lot of metal. A medium penetration rod. slag almost black and comes off mostly by itself.6010 does NOT deposit a lot of metal but is a deep penetrating rod used for root pass.

Check the link and you will see.I am in south Louisiana and use 7018 quite a lot, it is my main electrode in the type of work I do. I don't have an oven, but by keeping my rod cans sealed with plastic and tape I get a pretty good life out of it. I wouldn't use it for testing and if I had to do code work I would get an oven. With that said most of what I do is to no specific code. The rods I carry on my truck are kept in sealed 10lb tubes and I in fact have more trouble with keeping 6010 fresh than anything. I don't leave the tubes laying around open, just get a few out, close it and burn them before getting more. For practicing you should do fine with them if stored in this manner.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:i guess i'll buy a rod oven, their cheap enough, and start using 7018 again. i was using the 7014 to get the hang of pipe welding again, but might as well use what you test with. thanks everybody for you insight. robert |
