I have a Miller XMT multiprocess welder my boys bought for me at an incredible price(no it's not hot) I recently discovered that it is the 460/525 model. I only have 240 single phase. My son asked the guy he bought it from how he had it hooked up and he was told he used standard 240v single phase house current and used it to stick weld with 150 ft of stinger/ground. is this possible? to my knowlege it has never been used for tig or mig. Miller says the boards and "magnetics" can not be changed any ideas?? anyone want to offer a trade? SSS
Reply:Now you know why they got such a good deal on it....my LWS has had one setting on the floor that was bought and never used the place closed down .....$1500
Reply:are you saying that it isn't a good welder? or ir has problems?
Reply:No problems......just you can use the one you have.....as far as I know.....I could be wrong but don't think it will work....Mike
Reply:Send it to me for complete evaluation.  My new shop has three phase.  The only place to ask is miller.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Miller makes an XMT 304 that is 465-525 volts input- and as far as I know, that machine wont run on 220 volts. If miller told you its not retrofittable, than they probably are right. So, you either need a step up transformer, to transform your 220 power to 475, (not cheap, but do-able)or you need to trade it to somebody who has the higher voltage- usually only big factories have this, and most would prefer to pay more for a machine with full factory warranty. The base machine is a great welder- I love mine- but if you dont have the right voltage to power it, its useless to you.As mentioned- this is why the machine was cheap.
Reply:No, its not retrofitable!!However, if you go to your local electrical supply shop, you can pick up a stepup transformer 230 - 460. A 10KVA unit should suit your purposes nicely on 3 phase. there is another calculation for single phase, but i can't remeber it right now....If you have a XMT 456, or Phoniex, you can't go single phase.Miller techLast edited by Cruizer; 02-22-2008 at 01:15 PM.
Reply:I have the XMY 304 cc/cv #903 473 460/575. In the Miller catalog (2007 pg38) it seems to indicate that it can be hooked up either single or 3 phase yet the back of the machine says 406/575 3 phase. perhaps a stepup transformer is the best route, rather than taking a beating on a trade. btw this is a great forum, I plan to spend  lots of time in here. SSS
Reply:You really should research this stuff before plunking down $$$$$ for the unknown..Good price at the beginning but now.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The XMT304 comes in two models. One is strictly high voltage 3 phase (and this sounds like yours from the info), and the other will work on 3 phase or single phase (multiple voltages). Mine is the 1 or 3 phase version and switching it to single phase just involved disconnecting a wire inside the case. When I was shopping around for it I did see that the 3 phase model can be had much cheaper than the 1 or 3. In fact almost any used three phase machine goes for far less than it's single phase counterpart. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Always go FIRST by the data plate on the back of the machine and SECOND by the manual. The sales literture is useless unless you are buying a unit that suits you needs. If you happened to have the serial#, I could tell you if the unit could possibly run in 460 single phase. It should according to the wiring diagram, but its good to make sure at this point.
Reply:The serial # is LA197463 . Are you a Miller technician Cruizer?what are the differences in the boards? at work we build all sorts of custom machinery with advanced electronics(PLC's etc) so it must be possible to convert it to 208/230 surely. SSS
Reply:Here is the owners manual for it.....http://www.millerwelds.com/service/locate_om.phpThis is directly from it...."The Auto-Link circuitry in thisunit automatically links thepower source to the primaryvoltage being applied. A230/460 unit can be connectedto either 230 or 460 VAC inputpower. A 460/575 model can beconnected to either 460 or 575VAC input power."
Reply:After a very quick look at the Circuit Diagram PC2 is different in the two.....no telling what else is.......
Reply:Lets see:Main board different, auxillary transformer different, missing contactors, basically the units is exceeding different from the standard 230/460 unitAnd yes it is a 3 phase only unitAnd yes I own a factory authorized Miller service center.
Reply:Get yourself a stepup transformer and be done with it
Reply:Thank you Cruizer, I surely appreciate your sound advice. I will begin to search for a step up transformer.  Thanks to all who replied. SSS
Reply:With all that said once you weld with it you are going to like it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
