I was just curious if any of you guys here on the board are working for Cat. I have a D5 crawler with a busted C-frame that's in need of repair. It was repaired once before, and broken in the same spot again. I know the guy who repaired it before, and he is a pretty decent weldor. I know cat sometimes has certain weld procedures to repair some of there equipment, and I was just curious if anyone knew about the C-frames on the D5's. I'll call Cat Monday, but thought I would ask on here first. Thanks ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Don't actually work for Cat but have fixed many parts in house..No field work..But if it was repaired once And it does it again..Something else could be behind the failure that's being overlooked......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap, that is my initial thinking as well, Just want to cover my bases, and make sure I don;t make a mistake that "could" have been made previously.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Jackson, I work with CAT stuff all the time, but don't have anything in particular to help you out, They can be pretty tight lipped as far as I've seen. I'll ask a couple guys I know. Do you have any pics of the failure?
Reply:We've got a D5C that developed cracks in the C frame at both radiuses. I took it off and plated the bottom with half inch plate. We've put around 3,000 hours on it since then with no problems. It broke the first time because it was a little to light for the application. Just welding it together isn't going to make it better than new.
Reply:Just welding a break is never gonna make it better than new. This break is in the left radius as well, and was plated front and back. It broke thru both plates right where it was broken before. I am assuming this is more cause by operator negligence than anything else at this point.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
