hey all im a Welder/Mechanic at a local scrap yardf and im having problems getting the 1/2 " Ar 400 plate to stay on a crusher head its on a horizontil   baler that operates at 3000 psi and the head is approx 5'x2' soit has a lot off shifting pressure as the metals compressthe machine is 18 months old and the factory plates have fallen offapprox 6 months ago and the ive replaced them twice since implug welding twenty four 3/4 " holes preheating the area to apprx 300 deg./and welding with e7018 rods  but they just keep falling off any suggestions? im stumped
Reply:I'm also in the recycling business. What make and model is this baler? What are you baling with it? We have a mix of about 80 compactors and balers. Have you welded all the way around the plate? I never had a wear liner fall off unless it was worn through. This week we had the back of the presshead rip apart on a harris HRBIII. Pics to be posted soon in a different thread if they turn out.Last edited by tresi; 03-14-2008 at 08:54 PM.
Reply:its a IBC cant remember the model of that particular machine that machine bales alluminium/stainless.  just rebuilt a ram head on a seirra logger what a nightmare .ive welded around the hole thing hadto unbolt the front of the machine dissconnected the head and slid it all the way out of the machine because the side plates also came off ?
Reply:I would get a hold of the manufacture's tech support and see if they have a different welding proceedure. I've always had good luck with 7018 but once I had a tech rep recommend using stainless steel rod for their wear liners but wouldn't or couldn't tell me what his liners were made of.
Reply:thanks ill do that
Reply:Maybe try the same proceedure but with some 309 SS. --Gol'
Reply:preheat to 500 and maintain 400 on the interpass. wrap or lay a welding blanket over the welded area when done and leave overnight. i always welded mine at the end of the shift, i usually go over the welded area with a little post heat to try and even the temp across the plate. 7018 will work fine for AR400.check with the manufacturer on the base metal you are welding on. my whole crusher was A36 except the impactor housing. it was an OEM wear plate loaded with chromium. do not attempt to weld if it is. or find out there weld parameters. you may try bolt in liners. i like those because you only have to change the plates that are high wear and most can be flipped to the other side for max wear."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
