Reply:ive personally never done xray but for the FCAW dont chip it to hard cause the divits will be picked up in thr xray...and they all should probably be as clean as possible. good luck6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"
Reply:Clean them perfectly... where i work we shoot welds often during out outages and several fabulous welder have failed to pass the x-ray because of improper/inadequate cleaning after the pass(es). X-Ray will show all imperfections.GOOD LUCK to you!Certified Welding Inspector at your service...Level II Nuclear Welding InspectorLevel II Nuclear Electrical InspectorLevel II Nuclear Civil InspectorLevel II Ultrasonic Thickness Testing TechnicianCertified Smartass, and Wise Acre
Reply:HY80 is a higher strength low alloy steel, I think most often used in naval construction.  It shouldn't require any extraordinary measures to weld for your visual and x-ray inspection.  References I found online suggest you should avoid overheating the material during welding, because this could degrade it's toughness at low temps(as determined by Charpy Notch testing).  No specifics for interpass temps were mentioned, but I'd default to a max temp of 500°F.  All of this is academic since you only need to pass visual and x-ray.I'll second(or third) the recommendations that you clean the weld toe lines between each pass.  Also make certain that your 2G FCAW beads are well tied-in, so there's no slag trapped under the bottom toe lines.  If all this obvious, apologies for overstating the obvious.
Reply:Don't think about it just put in a clean weld and all will be fine. First thing out of your mouth on the day of the test is a copy of all welding procedures that you are going to use. READ THE PROCEDURE MAKE THE WELD!!!The Hy80 is of no concern.Clean between all passes grind all restarts, brush after all grinding. Take your time get comfortable do your best. You are in control you can physc your self in or out, choose one.JimmyLast edited by worldsgreatestwelder; 03-26-2008 at 09:35 PM.
