Can someone please expain to me the process of hitting a welded metal piece with a hammer while the piece is cooling. I have heard that this action can help with keeping things square, straight, etc. I usually keep things clamped until cooled and hope for the best. Does this make any sense?
Reply:It's called peining and I think I have some info on somewhere. I will see if i can find it. It's mostly done on sheet metal.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:It stress relieves the weld. Hitting it with a "Ball PEEN" hammer or blunt pointed slag hammer lest the weld relax a little. This removes tension and is less prone to crack or break.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:or on cast iron. Helps to relieve stress.
Reply:I just learn this too. Here is the link to a recent thread.........http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=20244I heard you can do this to people that induce stress on you too!!!!DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!
Reply:I use PEENING for cast iron as well. But I use a air-powered needle scaler, like I do for heavy slag removal as well.
