I am trading with a friend, as always (whenever possible) and need  some insight..  he has a welder.. its a lincoln a  870  866 .. it has a kohler gas motor and is in decent to fair condition..  hours unknown but it IS used.. we need to find the value of this item for trading purposes and I cannot find any information anywhere on the net pertaining to used welder values..  can someone please tell me where to start  the bidding on the value of this item ?  I am assuming its worth 350 - 500 if it runs am i correct ?  just need a ballpark so we can figure out the deal.. he has two welders and wants me to have this one but we have no clue what the value would be since we cannt find anything comparable on ebay or the net...someone please clue me in..  im just a hack job of a welder anyway, never did claim to be a welder, looks more like metal glue when i get done.. haha.. ok.. well thanks for your time.. sure hope someone answers me..  Spin
Reply:Well if your are friends and he has two.  The Value should be what the both of you feel is right.  I know it sounds weird but I have done deals like this where I have almost given away bikes just due to a friend needed one, and I had an extra at the time.  But hey good luck on the hunt..
Reply:The rule of thumb I use when I try to sell somthing used is first to figure out what it would cost new. Lets say the welder cost $X. If like new to very good I try to start at 70-75% of new. Good condition 45-65%, Fair 30-40%, Poor/ parts only >25%- OBO. Age plays somewhat into the equasion. An older AC welder with fixed taps would sell for less than a newer one with infinate adj. assuming the same condition. Freinds for cash... well that gets a little fuzzy. Usually I ask 10-25% less of what I think I could get from someone else, but thats a hard call to make. In a trade even up, I'd look at what both of you feel the items are worth and come to an understanding of how you both made the decision. As long as both of you feel the deal is even or close and no one feels cheated thats what matters. I've even had freinds offer me more later when they felt that they got too good a deal. Usually I won't take the money unless I feel I'll offend them by continuing to refuse, the I will only take 1/2 what they offer. Most times they understand after I refuse the second or 3rd time. Its more the thought of the offer that matters, not the money. Hey thats what real freinds are for.
