I just bought some metal today for a new welder cart to hold my mig and stick and figured I would share my cost so we can compare metal prices.1/8 square tube 1" X 20' $25.831 X angle 1/8 X 20' $12.11How's this compare to the prices you guys get?
Reply:I buy used at $.35 per pound; square, round, thin or thick, plate or structural shapes. I don't mind a little surface rust.
Reply:Out of curiosity where in PA, if you are in PA are you 69 chevy?
Reply:I generally buy hodge podge batches so I always convert mine to pounds then figure the price/per lb. That way I can always guestimate the poundage of materials I need (or am going to buy) then estimate the bill. Mine always shows the weight on the bill any way. Works good for me. Just bought some 3"x3"x3/16ths, was 72¢ per lb. Not much different than what it has been.
Reply:Yeah, I was informed last week that my prices would go up about 50%. I picked up the latest "temporary" price list and 1/8X1sq is $25 currently paying $18. My prices will go into effect May 1.I will have to be creative. Fortunately, I have steel for all current job. I don't think I will feel the effects for about 3 months. On the other hand, I scraped some stuff yesterday at $10/100lbs.I wonder what it will cost at Home Depot and Lowes.Last edited by tapwelder; 04-19-2008 at 11:03 PM.

Reply:A couple of weeks ago I bought a piece of new mild steel HR 2"x2"x1/8"x10' angle in So. CA (mfd. in USA) from a local metal supplier for $18.50 before tax. Reply:about 2 weeks ago I paid 50 cents a pound. Probably went up since then.Seems like we should have more steel mills in the US. There has to be a profit in that price somewhere.I live near the old Fairless Works. And not too far from Sparrows Point. My whole family was from Johnstown Pa. All of those places seem like they would be good places for a steel mill.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
