I found a low heat solder paste to weld my fish hooks my question is what kind of acid should I use to eat off the bronze plating the solder paste does not want to stick to the bronze plating if I wire brush the hook first it holds fine but that is very time consuming I need to do a quick dip then solder. Also I need to color the silver color solder to a bronze color any way to do a quick dye or what should I use to do this the easyest and quickest way
Reply:You could try the basics first, say muriatic acid that you can pick up from most home centers. We use some very nasty acids for cleaning concrete off tools, but I would be afraid it would weaken the hook too much.Maybe you could try sand blasting them. Set the points into a small block of wood and blast away with a fine sand or abrasive. How about a small bennch sander? hold the hook with a pair of pliers and gently sand the area you want to solder. If you are using lead based solder a mild acid may darken the joint, try vinegar.
Reply:that bronze coating may be varnish---try acetone .
Reply:There is a low temp silver solder that jewlery shops use, It's called Staybrite. Cats *** stuff when used with the liquid flux. I use it for welder armatures. Strong stuff way better than any electrical solder, and naturally somewhat more expensive.
Reply:Just something to think about here. Even the low temps used for soldering will ruin the temper of the hooks. This may or may not be an issue for you.Epoxy works great for plenty of stuff. I've made LOTS of lures myself. You should post up some pics and give some more details!Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:Sorry, if it was me, I'ld buy better hooks. http://www.mustad.no/http://www.ownerhooks.com/http://www.gamakatsu.com/http://eagleclaw.com/site/Now if you are going to talk about welded rings on iron jigs, that is a horse of a different color!...Then, I'm ALL EARS!!
