How hard do you guys think this part will be to make? These are rear upper camber arms. What material would you guys use also? im thinking chromolly. with Steel flanges. My only problem is where to get the adjustment pillow ball ends?I can weld, its just the part about how difficult would it be to make something like this.this maker of the pics, makes them out of .180 wall steelthanks, brentLast edited by disepyon; 04-28-2008 at 10:48 PM.
Reply:Do you have a die that will bend it?Me!
Reply:you should be able to hand form them pretty easy out of solid stock if the weight isnt an issue. or you could make them out of tubing and use mitre cuts, they prob dont need to be the exact same shape they just need clearance and to mount in the same locations. Looks like an easy part even if you do not have acess to a brake or tubing bender, you could also try hand bending tubing using a fixture if you fill the tube with sand it is less likely to kink,
Reply:those heim joints will be tough to track down with the extended center hubs. but not impossible.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:if that is just a sleeve then you can get them at mcmaster or any number of bearing houses . I suggest aurora brand.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:thanks for the replys guys,No i dont have access to a bender.Do you think any place sells any kind of bends that size tubing?about the joints, thanks for the names, ill check them out.what would you guys recommend on wall thickness and if i should use steel or chromolly?
Reply:Make sure you know exactly what your doing and have the talent and equipment to do it right. You don't want to find out at 60 mph that the weld didn't hold! Good luck with the project. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg...xId=0&x=51&y=7Smaller heim joints.  Any hot rod or 4x4 shop should be able to source the heim joints you need if grainger doesnt have them.  I wouldn't do such a thing with HREW or a pipe bender, I'd go with DOM and a real bender etc. for a suspension part.
Reply:what diameter is the tubing?bends can be done without tubing benders, obviously.  Look around in dumpsters, steel scrap yards, and look for anything round that will match the radius your are trying to attain.heat the metal and work it SLOWLY, dont force it, it will tend to kink, but wont be as much of an issue with 180 wall tubing.as others have said, make sure your welding skills are up to par, or take it to someone else for the welding.kinda curious, what axactly do these do, other than provide camber? where are they going, take some pictures, it might help spark other, easier, ideas...
Reply:You might want to consider the fact that once you play with the geometry, things can go very wrong!!! You would want some very good equipment to make proper jigs and then get very good measured fit up and correct geometry. Even something that looks to be a straight line is likely not, and you'd best know which way it goes.....And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:thanks guys,I was never intending to bend it myself, If i go through with this i would take it to a place that has a bender or mandrel bender. My welding skills is good that this part is easy breezy to make a good weld.I was planning on hitting up some local guys whom might have this part that has not been installed yet and get some measurements and try and get a jig set up for it.Which brings me to my next question, how might you guys go about making a jig for this? i have some in mind, just wanted to hear from you experty welders.Ive worked with these before in person, my cousin had some from a different company and also my other cousin too, and some friends, but similar style, so i know about the clearance and which way it goes on and how it works.then my other question is the flange plating that is U bent.  You would think after awhile the bends would start to crack or show signs of wear?Last edited by disepyon; 04-29-2008 at 01:51 AM.
Reply:i wouldnt make the u bend.  get some channel of correct thickness and dimensions, then cut out what you need.

Reply:The heim joint or faniir rod end is easy to get. Just Google for itOr like the other member said, go to McMaster Carr, or Graniger. Etc.,.I would make this part by using GTAW welding and I would make a Fixture. The .180 tube will bend easily because it is thick wall. But do not use a solid bar as it will be weaker than a tube. Area1(inside)+area2(Outside) =strength.Make the fixture on a heavy plate and bolt or screw the components into position. Bolt your brackets on and then make your tubes and weld. You may need a left AND right or maybe just turn over.OK ....I just looked at it again and you will NOT need a left and right version because it is semitricalLast edited by Donald Branscom; 04-29-2008 at 05:38 PM.
Reply:Thanks guys, where would i get a c channel, ive been browsing around and they usually come i big bulks or feet, and then they might be to big or small.
Reply:For all the trouble of trying to duplicate that part, it is probly worth it to just buy it from whomever made the one you posted the pic of.  Sometimes trying to save a buck ends up costing alot more in the end when you consider time and hassle and often the end result is still not as good.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
