Reply:All the time for much the same reasons Brett posted. Taking everything that comes at you is a sure path to welding doom.
Reply:I have had to turn down a lot thru the years. Some for fear of getting paid, just did`nt like the customer, they want me to be the engineer, but most because what they wanted just would`nt work. And some people you just will not listen.
Reply:I have had projects that were going to be used in a very unsafe manner, so I passed on them( I don't want to be blamed for someone plunging to their death...) and, I am really busy much of the time, so I can only take on so many jobs. It still kills me to say" It will be 6 months before I can start..." But, you have to let a few things go. I was offered $7000 a month take home, free housing included, plus a company truck to move to the Bahamas to remodel some very exquisite homes. My wife and I were seperated, and the only thing that held me back was my 2 sons. I literally cried in front of my computer when I typed the rejection of the offer. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Are u nuts lady...WTF
Reply:No, you aren't. There are plenty of jobs out there that no one in their right mind would or should touch.
Reply:Once when I was laid off a Japanese auto company was interviewing me for a salary welding engineering job.  They said right up front they would expect 7 12 hour days for a very long time to launch a new factory.  I asked about getting extra compensation, and they said no.  Just a straight salary offer and not a very good one at that.  Fortunately, they let me off the hook by not extending an offer.  I did not say no per se, but they got the hint with my questions.  They could have made any very poor offer and forced me to accept or lose my layoff benefits by law!
Reply:There is as much (maybe more) money made by recognizing and turning down the sinkers, as by getting the good deals.

Reply:Well there are those who think you should be able to do 2 weeks worth of work in 2 days as in "I know it's Friday, but I have this party I've been planning for 3 months on Sunday).Or the ones who make you waste the time to give an estimate only to tell you they were figuring it would run about the cost of the materials for the whole job. Then there are the ones who think anything can be welded and used safely. And then there are the idiots. I seem to get all of them. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:Seriously though, I've turned down a few jobs.  It's usually because of my gut feeling about the customer more than the job itself.  Sometimes I get the feeling that a particular person will NOT be satisfied no matter what you do, and I don't care if he's one of the guys that pays $75 an hour.I had another guy that wanted a hot tub wired in his backyard, and wanted me to go really shallow on the trenching and stuff to save him some money.  He also wanted me to install a receptacle behind a glass display case of stuff that looked expensive, and I would be the one to move it.  I gave him a very high price and he balked.  He called a week later, and I flat told him that I wasn't interested in the work.  I just kept getting that "trap" feeling.Originally Posted by MAC702There was this one time I was asked to weld up an exhaust elbow for a boat....
