A friend of mine asked me to make a small weld on his motorcycle. What is the safest way to do this?I assume I should disconnect his battery.  (His BMW has more computing power on-board than my first desktop computer.)  I believe the area in question is not near the gas tank, but I'm cognizant of that.Sorry if this is a terribly n00b-ish question.MM180
Reply:It is not safe to weld on a motorcycle if you are riding it; you'll crash for sure. Plus, where would you put the welder???!!! Other than that, just disconnect the battery, and have at it. No different than a modern car.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Rojodiablo is absolutely correct.  I tried welding on a bike once and it did not go well.  The added speed and weight of a motorcycle would make this very dangerous.

Reply:You better check the laws for the area you live in. where I live it is illegal to weld or mod a bike frame in anyway.I know people do this all the time but it's something I thought someone should add to the topic.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:I would recommend using the GTAW process and that you do not use the high frequency for starting the arc to be on the safe side with all of those electronics on board. I would use scratch start or if it's a newer machine the "lift arc" if it's available.regardsER70s-2
Reply:Using the GTAW process, won't the wind blow the shield gas away while he's on the bike?I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:It is safe if you know what you are doing. I would definitely disconnect the electronics. As far as process it depends on what you are doing. I've used 7018 and gmaw both on them. As for mods it's perfectly legal in the US, in fact it is big business for some. I know that it is illegal in Germany. That's why they will pay twice as much as a new Harley costs for one that a GI brings over already modified. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
