I have a 1/2 in. piece of 4x2 foot steel that I am going to build a welding table out of and was needing to know what you guys think is the best hieght.
Reply:This is when you need to be a bit selfish! Make it a height that you can relax at. I am 6' and most times I end up stooped over and get lower back pain. Find a height that your hands, arms, shoulders and back are in their most relaxed stance. This will help you avoid fatigue that robs you of productivity!City of L.A. Reply:How about an adjustable table?I am thinking I may do this...http://www.beacontechnology.com/scis...pumplifttable/Me!
Reply:It's a height thing.  I cannot give a number that will suit you.  For a general fab up table say 4' x 4', my table legs are either 36" or 38" to be comfortable, and so I can stand at full height without stooping. That doesn't work for most guys.  They are looking for a step stool. What can I say?  Everything was ordered from the factory size LARGE. Reply:A comfortable weldor makes better welds.I'm a hobby guy, I use TIG and O/A. I like my weld right in front of me, so that means I'm most comfortable with the weld about 16" taller than whatever I'm sitting on. And don't forget the height of your vise.If you're mig'n or stick'n or stand'n, yer on yer own. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Reply:If it's your table then go by your beltbuckle..Perfect height for your table..You still have room to sit comfortably while tigging but when standing up to do things like grinding it keeps the stress off your back..Thats important if your old....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I just built one with adjustable height legs from about 30 to 42 inches.  I used 24 inches of 3 inch angle for the legs then put a one inch pipe inside each onto which I welded a nut for 18 inches of 1 inch ACME rod.  At the bottom of the rod is another nut welded to it with arms on it.  Under that are the lockable casters.  Not only can I adjust for height but, each leg can be adjusted for the uneveness of the driveway so the table is always level.  Does that make any sense?  If you'ld like pics you can search this user name over at the "Orange Site" which goes unspoken here.Be the river, Baby!

Reply:Sorry 'bout that, it's the orange and blue site that starts with an "S".  At the risk of angering the gods:  http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/...ad.php?t=14815If interest is here, I'll take a few detail pics of the adjusters.Last edited by Bubba Tex; 05-14-2008 at 03:41 PM.Reason: add infoBe the river, Baby!

Reply:Here are the pics:The top nut is welded to the bottom of the table leg and the bottom nut is welded to the bottom of the ACME Rod.  By turning the handle, the rod is threaded either up into the pipe or out of it. Attached ImagesBe the river, Baby!

Reply:Build it waist high and if you are sitting to high to weld just cut the legs on your stool.  My welding table was great for FCAW or GMAW because I was standing.  When I started TIG I needed to sit, so I cut the legs on my stool and all is good.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
