Hello, I am new to this forum and welding itself. I love playing basketball and my hoop recently fell after a huge wind storm and bent the rim so its like a watermelon shape. A normal hoop is 18" and now since the rim is f'd i would like to weld it so it is only 15" across to make it harder to shoot. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i could do this? THank you form you time/help-Jaymike
Reply:Hi welcome to the forum. If I was trying to make a 15" dia circle I would start with a new piece of steel. My math shows you will need just under 4'. I would get a longer piece because it will be easier to bend with out special tools. I would find a strong round object under 15", say an old tire rim. I would use this to bend the circle and then cut the ends to match. The metal will spring back after you bend it that's why you need a smaller dia form to make a 15" circle, and bend the stock past where the other end is so that you avoid flat spots at the beginning and end. This is all rough trial and error stuff, but shouldn't be too hard.Cut the old rim off and weld up the new one.Hope this helps.
