Did a quick search on this, no luck. What causes flash burns? Is it the IR or UV that does it?(Note: I hope that this doesn't turn into a WWW III thread like the Harbor Freight thread I started about the helmets.  Is there a simple answer?)Thank you,Tim

Reply:The ultraviolet light causes flash burns.Wear a black T shirt and after a week or so you will see that the neck area of the T shirt it will actually fade out in that area. Black is a good color because it absorbs the ultraviolet light. The Infared damage is also a concern just like the sunlight damage or any metal that is red hot or glass blowing fire etc.,.I knew a university professor that got skin cancer all around the lower face from looking into ceramic kilns. Fortunately is was not fatal.I got skin cancer on the top edge of one of my ears because i am a Viet Nam vet and my ears got toasted constantly. Men get skin cancer of the left forearm from hanging the arm on the drivers window of vehicles.Take care of your skin. When you are in your 20's you think nothing will happen to you, then SUDDENLY you are 50 and the doctor tells you that the problems you are having are because you did not pay attention and take of yourself when you were 20. Then you realize you are just like everyone else. WOW.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 05-20-2008 at 09:35 PM.

Reply:I someimes put suscreen on my neck andface if there is a lot coming undr my bucket. This dosn't happen often.
Reply:I'm not sure what you mean by flash burns. Now if you mean burned eyes it is from the ir and uv. Those are the ones that can blind you. Both are bad for your eyes and can damage them. I read about it a long time ago but can't recall exactly what it said any longer. If I don't forget when I have time to look I will see if I can find it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:zOdiac, not trying to start a war but evidently you have never had a real flash burn from reflection or someone welding behind you or your hood developing a leak. A bunch of us have and anyone will tell you it hurts like hell for several hours. It's caused by the UV light from the arc. I hope you never have to experience it. Basically it's sunburned eyeballs.
Reply:Not that all the personal experience and opinion isn't absolutely fascinating, just pointing out that hotrodder nailed it.  Did any of you bother following his link?http://www.twi.co.uk/j32k/protected/...radiation.html

Reply:Originally Posted by z0diacFlash burns as in related to the welding arc??  Usually welding flash never 'burns' - it just bothers your eyes for a few seconds until your sight gets rid of those black spots.  But it can't really burn you since it's more of a visual thing, not a heat thing. And it's neither the IR or UV that does it - it's the light in the visible spectrum.

Reply:ROTFLMAO@ both of you. You wouldn't believe how many people I have had ask me how I can see what I am doing when I weld cause that flash is so bright it hurts my eyes when I try to weld. I actually had one tell me this morning that he "burned my eyes out a long time ago welding, all that sparks and that bright light I couldn't ever tell what I was doing". I just looked at him and said that's why I use the hood with the 350 dollar lens in it. So I can see what I am doing and keep my sight. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
