So much talk about hoods but i thought it would be neat to see the actual numbers.do you use a standard fixed front, flip front or auto darkening.i am doing this as research because i will be buying my first hood soon. (leaving school, entering industry)this is the hood i plan on getting but im wondering if i should go auto darkening..http://store.weldingdepot.com/cgi/we...t/3013597.htmlhttp://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:2 Jackson Shadows with EQC executive AD cartridge (one at work, one at home)2 Speedglas 2000x (same as above)1 Jackson Shadow with shade 10 gold (home)1 Huntsman Fiber Hood with shade 12 gold (home)1 Jackson flip front with shade 14 (home)and my trusty shade 5 goggles for OA (hanging on my bottle cart)I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:I have a Miller Elite A/D hood, but 90% of the time I use my standard Jackson 4x5 window hood.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I use a lincoln big window fixed with a gold lens and the top of the line harbor freight big lens auto darkening hood. the harbor freight one is a bit flimsy but works well.
Reply:I use my Millers elites at the shop, and I have a another one that is an elite hood with a regular 4x5 shade in it shade for air arc and anytime Im in the fieldYup
Reply:I would recommend you get a Shadow instead of a HaloX. The Shadow offers much better protection. The Halo is only good for welding flat while looking down at the weld. Any other position will get you burned. I have both and got the Shadow for that very reason. I've been a long time user of Jackson hoods but now have a Miller Performance (had it a couple of weeks now) and seriously doubt I will ever buy another Jackson. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:my last stop is i dont know if i could trust an auto, (the ones i could afford anyways). is 5ms a good time? sounds a little slow to me??http://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:I have a pair of Jackson Shadow 4x5's at work.  Keep different shade lenses in each (currently 10 and 12).  Keep 7, 10, 11, 12, and 13 in my tool box.  I prefer the glass filter plates to the polycarbonate.  I also put a clear plate on the inside as well to keep the filter plate from getting scratched.  I have no desire to have an autodark.  I'd guess maybe 25% of the guys at work use autodarks.
Reply:Hello all,  I have always used Huntsmans. I have one large window and a sliding window they are the only thing I have ever owned.  I have used speedglas but never did buy one.
Reply:Standard issue at work, and the only one I used for the longest time was a basic black big window Jackson. Recently I bought a Hawk A/D helmet, made by Arc-One. $99 at the LWS. After using it for a few weeks now, I love it. If you're paranoid about whether it's going to work that day, just put it on and spark a torch striker in front of it. For me, as a rookie myself, it makes stick welding MUCH easier especially when using 7018 rod on an auto idle Lincoln Ranger.
Reply:Huntsman 430P flip front with an Omni-View Gold label # 10.....my 6th one in 35 yrs...
Reply:I have three and am going to get another... A Miller Auto ($120 version) that I use for light stick and MIG.  and two Jackson BIG window hoods, one has #12 green and the other #10 red/brown I use them for TIG and heavy stick I found that my auto was not dark enough for TIG and I had a hard time seeing the pool.I also want to get a gold lens, used one once and liked it.  Everything is blue, bright and good visibility.Me!
Reply:El cheapo auto darkening one here - would like one of the Miller hoods though! Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!

Reply:Two auto darkening ( H F ) models one is solar and one is solar with battery backup one jackson fixed lens non auto darkening and one Lincoln hand held shield. Use the two H F auto darkening. and the others are for guests to watch, when I allow. Love the auto darkening! And I've had the battery backup one for about 19 months now and no battery replacement yet.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:I have two: a Huntsman with flip up lens and an Optrel Satellite AD. The Huntsman is definitely the backup

Reply:Well I have a 28 year old Jackson flip front (the first lightweight plastic hood to come out btw), a Fibremetal flip front (identical to the Jackson from my days welding while wearing a hard hat), a Jackson Halo with a #10 lens just in case all others break, a Shadow with a Boss cartridge (sending it to my dad because the weight combined with my bad neck gives me migraines), a Miller Performance A/D (replaced the Jackson Boss) and I really like it and wish I had gotten it sooner, and an arcone single A/D shade 10 in my pancake for the really tight spots. I do a lot of work that requires me to get into tight spots and auto dark is really nice. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I have a Jackson Halo at work.  Fabulous investment.  I also have a Miller Big Window Elite. Another Fabulous investment. Both are great helemts, I've never had problems with either.  If you buy an AD hood, buy a second set of batteries to stash in your tool box. Also, check to see what size lenses the company you work will supply.. buying lenses for the miller hoods gets very pricey when you start going through a few every week.
Reply:thanks for the tips. i think i will be getting the jackson shadow for now. later if i choose i will upgrade with an auto lense.thanks againmatthttp://www.aloumac.ca/
