hey guys, finally bought a maxstar 150 stl and a hypertherm 380 plasma. I've owned a trailblazer/HF box for years. Currently doing a sheetmetal job requiring non-joint surface welding on thin sheetmetal. I'm having trouble keeping the beed uniform and consistant. Can anyone suggest ways to improve?
Reply:With that machine you have that job is going to be diffacult. Not impossible.Air cooled -scratch start TIG. Tough to do.You need a foot controlled, watercooled machine, that will operate at the 5 amp range.BUT.... use a 1/16 tungsten, correct amperage and .045 or smaller filler wire if you can get it.Make sure you tack the seams first.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Does it have to be welded? Is silicon bronze an option?

Reply:Donald, an STL has a low end of 5A and lift arc FWIW- need a fair bit more than 5A for 20g anywayWagin, practice is the only way to improve. Using 1/16 filler would make things more difficult, if you haven't any finer filler then straighten out some MIG wire- cut a length, clamp one end in a vice the other in a drill chuck, put some tension on it and give it a spinYou say 'non joint surface welding' (build up work). What exactly is it you're trying to achieve? More info will result in better advice

Reply:Thanks guys for all the info. To answer a few questions, what i'm attempting to do is out line a shadow profile portrait (wire-frame profile). Yes, I think sil-bronze would do, and the suggestion of using mig wire as filler will help, could not find find anything smaller than 1\16 filler. I bought a hypertherm 380 a few days ago. Any suggestions on what type of in-line air/oil filters works best when using a 5hp 7.5 cfm 20 gal. compressor? Also, how do you list the equip. owned as part of posts?
Reply:have u considered O-A?nice small welding tip will do it...
