Okay im looking for a powerful 110 mig welder,I wanna run flux core, but what type of flux core and sheilding gas too use too get the most penatration out of it and what 110 mig welder should i get
Reply:I don't think you will find a dual shield wire that any 110 mig can run. You will be limited to self-shielded flux cored wire or gas shielded solid wire and 75% Argon/25% CO2 is a good shield gas for bare wire. The 110v migs are all going to be about the same as long as you stick with a name brand as in Hobart, Lincoln and Miller. Do some research and read the specs on each machine, compare them and then make an informed decision of your own. You aren't going to get massive power in a 110v machine. You also will not get a lot of penetration with mig as it is a low penetration process. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Jolly Roger has it about perfect. You CAN do other things to extend the limits of the little welders. Proper beveling of a joint is not just for vessel welders and pipe fitters. It really does make a HUGE difference. And, I am a big fan of preheating for a small welder on materials 3/16" and more. Also, learn how to do good muti-pass welds on thick materials. When you weld up a trailer hitch, and that steel is 3/8" thick, bevel, preheat and multi-pass. It can be done, but you have to practice and prep. Good luck!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Personally I'd go with a 120v machine over a 110v machine any day- 10 more volts.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Personally I think you should really rethink welding 3/8 with something you plug into the wall. If you preheat 3/16 to weld it, get a welding machine. Not a toy. DUH!

Reply:Like I said you may want to rethink...
Reply:But honestly, the question asked needs be answered. Go down to your LWS, grunt, throw money on counter and they will fix you up.

Reply:Welding rules of thumb:1. Get a place really close to 3 phase power lines. Its cheaper.2. Don't weld metal thinner than your welding rod.3. Don't ask what welder should I buy cause we don't know what you will try to do with it.4. Welder comparisons welcome.
Reply:So do you recommend preheating the 3/8 double bevel and running triple pass both sides or what. This is scary stuff here man. I tried a 110 MIG once to get the hang of MIG. A couple of 1/4 plates to weld together for practice. Several plates later the beads looked nice but alas I dropped it on the floor. OOOPPPPY It fell apart. Scary stuff here man. You be scaring me. I started on a 300 amp Square wave TIG. I am not unfamiliar with the little guys. They have a place but no place out of their realm no matter how tricky you want to get. If you don't have the machine or can't get the juice then don't do the weld. I think I'll go swimming today... But Yogi... the rip tides... No biggie BooBoo, I wanted to fish offshore anyway...Last edited by GSteve; 08-05-2008 at 03:12 AM.

Reply:Go get yourself a Lincoln Austonmoscrop. Reply:The most powerful 115 volt mig welder is the one that is plugged in to a 30 amp circuit.I have had an SP 100 for 20 years, I would never part with it.  It was my first mig welder. I don't use it a lot, but when I need it, there is no better machine.  I use it a lot on exhaust.Edit  Deleted wrong linkDavid Last edited by David R; 08-05-2008 at 07:46 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'll plug the MillerMatic 135.  ( or equiv...)  I have an older MM135 machine, .023 wire, with CO2 gas.  Works like a champ.
Reply:okay My current place no 220 that is accessable, only if i had a 100 foot power cord,I already have a 251 MM,but also do not have the storage,I would be welding max 3/4,I know all about single V,double V,I am asking what is a powerfull 110/120 welder is all

Reply:Each of the three, lincoln, miller, hobart, have a 140 model and that seems to be the cap. Don't know whether that's a feasibility issue or marketing thing but 140 is the popular top end for 120  volt applications. There are dual voltage machines but the price isn't what you'd like probably.
Reply:I find my 251 very powerful, for the little use i have ever got out of it
Reply:As Sandy stated each of the "big three" have 140 amp machines, I own a HH 135 and usw  MM140 at work. Both are good machines."If" you are going to buy a machine, then you have been given the answers to your question.Good luck.Tim Beeker.
Reply:ST Welder, It fell apart because the weld did not hold. The weld on one plate just fell away from the other cause it did not fuse to it. Great looking text book welds, but alas it was just laying on the plate. Remember now, it was first time Mig with rented machine. After tigging a year or 2 I was not impressed. I did not read the owners manual. I knew nothing about MIG. There it is. Disaster as it hit the floor. Then I got hired at the place I work now. 12 years later I know a tish more than then. A lot of reading and applying on welding, and structural stress, as to why things crack and fly apart. The pics are the result. A long way from oopppy it fell on the floor don't you think? 3/4 angle iron welded in 2 passes. So you see I laugh my A** off at trying to weld 3/16 to 3/8 with 110v mig. Now 110 MIGs have their place and I fault them not. I wouldn't want to weld muffler pipe with the welder pictured cause it wont go that low and a small mig would be great here at times. So I have a spool gun 1 rigged with .030.  Ya I know the the connector broke off and is on order as we speak. I don't shoot mice with my 30/06 when a pellet rifle will do. And I don't shoot elephants with pellet rifles. Actually I use Decon for mice. Really. Granted my employer owns the equipment I use but he expects me to do the job He hired me for and I am the only one of 6 left after 12 years. Maybe I be da stupid one. So Ya, I know exactly why the the plate fell apart on the floor. See the floor? only a foot in the rear was attached when I got there. Want to know how to squeeze the floor to the side in the field? Cat D9s. One on one side to hold and one on the other to squish the side back to the floor while you weld your a** off. Want more pics of my work or do you want to see my diploma? I have both. Weld it correctly or do not weld it at all. Attached ImagesLast edited by GSteve; 08-06-2008 at 12:25 AM.
Reply:If you want to weld 3/4 steel, 110 v mig not gonna cut it. see my above post. You gonna weld steel or just play with it?Originally Posted by GSteveIf you want to weld 3/4 steel, 110 v mig not gonna cut it. see my above post. You gonna weld steel or just play with it?
Reply:Sorry here but I got to agree that anything over 1/4 is moveing super fast away from any 110/120 migs ability. Also you need to remember that even with a lot of preheat on heavyer then 1/4 steel is going to require a decent duty cycle. All the 110 migs I hav seen have 30% ot lower at the very best at max load. This means to weld a single pass say 4 feet long would take you a couple hours or so.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:So do you want hard surfacing with that? Abraision or impact? Yep we do it all. Your number is 432. Calling #5...

Reply:Even 1 inch stuff only requires half that preheat and you want to still weld it? No wonder I am absolutely F$$$ing mad. Crazy mad. Just plain old F$$$ ing mad and now I'm realy Fducking  mad. Crazy mad.

Reply:Bottom Line,OP started this whole BS thread by asking the wrong question.  Then he threw a bunch of BS in (max I'll weld is 3/4") and it went down from there.A 120v mig, regardless of the manufacturer, can only produce so much power.  Anything over 1/4", regardless of prep, preheat, etc. is pushing the machine past what it was intended to do.  There's no substitute for amps when dealing with heavier material.Furthermore, I still can't figure out what the heck the OP is trying to achieve.  Says he has a MM251 but doesn't use it very often.  Even with the 251, if he's trying to weld 3/4" material, he better know what he's doing regarding prep, passes, and preheat. This thread seems to be going nowhere.  Simple answer is to buy the machine to do the job you need it to do.  If the job is beyond the machine's rated capability, buy (or use) a bigger freaking machine.  Don't ask a 1/2 Ton pickup to tow a D9 dozer.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:So is that like shut the F444 up or what? In all my experience and book learning to application, NO where did it even mention heating 1/4 steel to 400 degrees so you could weld it. So piss up a rope. What book did you get this stuff from cause I would really like to know. I may have a use for it later. I wave the bull**** flag here and now! Care to try a guided bend test?Last edited by GSteve; 08-07-2008 at 11:36 PM.
