I recently bought a hypertherm 380 plasma. Do I need an inline filter between compressor and machine, and if so, what type. I'm using a C.H. 6hp 7.7 CFM 20+ gal comp.... Also, any opinions on hp 380?Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:I use this one from CH.  It's a filter/desiccant dryer combo.  Works great!
Reply:You need to ensure that moisture, oil and particulate matter does not get into the plasma air inlet. These types of contamination will affect cut quality, and even more....consumable life. For sporadic use....the Motor Guard style filter works very well. It is commonly used for paint sraying applications and has a replaceble paper type element (the size of a roll of toilet paper). Many have used these filters with good results. If you have a lot of moisture....you may want to invest in a refrigerated air dryer. Harbor Freight has one that reportedly works quite well for around $300.Jim Colt
Reply:I use a Lincoln Procut 55 which comes with it's own filter/dryer, but back at the tank I run two dryers in line (85+ % humidity is the norm down here). I've never gotten any water in the plasma cutter. I'm sure Hypertherm would be more than happy to give you a recommendation as to what to use. If it were mine I would have already called them. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:thanks for the info...jimcolt mentioned a refer air dryer...Wouldwork on the same principle as a chiller....Would a heat exchanger type vessel charged with coolent do the same job? Basically, air dryers chill the compressed air to due point, therefore extracting moisture.... If so, said vessel would be simple to fab.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
