Can any offer info on way my Norman 7.5 kva spot welder has started to trip the 32amp system, we are spoting 4mm wire x 2 to make mesh panels?????????????Last edited by The Devils 54; 08-15-2008 at 11:54 PM.
Reply:Sounds like an issue inside the power source that allows stray current to flow to earth via the primary power cable. Loose earth clamps can cause this, in your application perhaps surface oxide is not helping matters, or the method of earthing your mesh.Good luck - Take earth leakage trips from welding machines very seriously, as you could be the most direct current path to earth.  Recommend a technician to test everything immediately.Consider adding this thread to the safety forum.Cheers.
Reply:Wow, sorry I missed this post for 3 days....my bad. Chrispc66 has a good point. I was thinking a burned up contact on the wiring somewhere that lets it arc out. I would say to unpug it, and check all the connections. A spot welder is a pretty simple machine, and you may be able to find a lug or other type of contact that is loose/ burned. Many times, a loose contact point will arc, but work until the arc burns away enough parent material or wire to lose the contact. Since it is tripping the breaker, if there is a loose end, it probably is making contact with the housing or another part, grounding it out.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Sorry to hijack your post Devils 54, apologies. But Rojodiablo, they are very nice crayfish there, nearly as big as ours off the south coast of WA. I believe you call 'em "lobsters", cos that's what we call our export crays.Great feed pal !! Well done. It takes balls to get your own. Those big 'uns are hard to yank outta their overhang or crevice too - welding gloves have many other uses....Cheers
