Im interested in what are some of the tools needed to start on the line? thanks
Reply:Who are you planning to go to work for? A med to large size employer will probably have a list of what you have to have. The answer can range from just showing up with a hood to supplying everything. no disrespect intened but if your asking this question you're surely not ready to strike out as an independant.
Reply:Get some Curve-O-Mark tools, a good torch(Victor Journeyman), a nice SA-200 and start husteling work.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:The one I worked for supplied everything except the truck, machine, grinders, chipping hammers and hood.Others can be much different. Tresi and Tozzi are both correct on all points. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I met a guy on a fishing trip once, he was a pipe welding foreman, or supervisor. I was about to take my LA test at the time, and we had quite a long discussion, which turned into a sort of pep talk. The biggest impression I got about him, was that if you wanted to weld pipe for him, you had better bring your "A game" to the try-outs! This particular guy told me that he was tough to impress. He didn't want to hear any excuses about misjudging pipe shrinkage or any of that, much less your actual welding ability. City of L.A. Reply:About the question I asked. You guys are right, Im just trying to have everything that I will need to go to work. I didnt want to buy equipment that I dont need and focus on what I will need. I did go to college for welding in the advanced pipe program, but thats been awhile. I know it will take some practice to get it back. I didnt want to try to get on somewhere and not have the basic tools to get started. We all have to start somewhere, and rather than not having the tools I need, I can get what I do need and there wont be an excuse. Thanks for the information.
Reply:Get a copy of "The Pipefitters and Welders Handbook" for your glovebox. It can save you a lot of time and headaches. A wrap-a-round, countour marker, a couple of torpedo levels, a center finder, a couple of good framing squares, a tri-square, a chalk box string line, two hole pins, and I carry magnetic 2 and 4 foot levels on the truck as well and have extras in the shop for when I need even more, lol. A 60 degree Victor cutting head is extremely handy but not an absolute requirement. If you are going to do pipe fabrication you will need all of those except the cutting head. I've had to supply all of that pretty much every where I have ever worked. Oh and something else I have that I find very handy is a 360 degree square. I can't even remember what it's called, lol, but man is it handy for determining angles.I hired on at one place where you had to cut and bevel your own pups for the test and beveling machines weren't allowed. Code IX G6 on sched 80 6 inch. Cuts and bevels were a checked part of the test and it had to be straight when you were finished. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship.
