I just picked up a small ring roller - only does up to 1/4" round bar, and 3/16" flat bar, which for now is fine for my needs.  It's pretty much the exact same as this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=36790Yesterday I was having a HECK of a time trying to get it to roll the 1/4" round bar I have.  The wheels on the roller were just slipping instead of pulling the metal through.  It required a lot of work to push from one end, the metal, as I cranked the rolling arm.So to make a long question short - what's easier to roll: hot rolled material or cold rolled?  (I'm of course referring to when I BUY the metal - not if the metal is hold or cold when *I* roll it, hehe)I know cold rolled metal is a LOT cheaper than hot rolled..Last edited by z0diac; 08-26-2008 at 07:34 AM."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:OK, I finally found an answer to my own question:From: http://www.metalreference.com/INFO_H...led_Steel.html 5) Most hot rolled products are very soft and bendable. This is really only noticable in the smaller bar sizes, but it can affect the final product if you are relying on the product to take a lot of strain.   If you are looking for a stiffer product, use Cold Finished Steel.----So I'll go with hot (since it's half the price of cold that works out better too  )"A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:I have that "Roller".PIA for round bar.It comes in handy if you need to make a rather large radius.Anythings small or making Rings:Do your self a favor and locate some pipe in the Dia or close to what you want yer final bend to be and just bend the round bar around the Pipe.To make rings just wrap the length of Round around the Pipe as many times as you can- pull off the "spring" and clamp it in a Vise, cut it down the middle and now you have several rings.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Cold rolled has no millscale.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Just clamp a visegrip on it, where it's slipping. No way that's pulling thru. As a TIG guy, hot rolled sucks.  It is, however, what I have in my garage. Edit: They're both mild steel and should bend with the same pressure.Last edited by Craig in Denver; 08-27-2008 at 01:25 AM.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:Brocolli - I saw a kid use a vari-speed drill in a jewelry class to turn a 1lb spool of stainless mig wire into several thousand 1/2" rings for making chain mail. Did it real quick too. Used about 3 foot of 1/2" rod, stuck the wire behind one of the teeth in the chuck and went to town. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:Just a couple shots of my first 'quicky' project - a lamp.  Oh actually it was the candle holder which surprisingly turned out to work upside down holding 4 candles just as well as the way I made it (rightside up holding 3, hehe).Oh yah, there's a couple shots of SawBlade Sally too...   I had to make my other robot (Stanley) a girlfriend...  SawBlade Sally is a cutie but don't get her angry.... Reply:it only let me attach 5 at once so here's the others....The one closeup is just the thin 24ga sheet metal welding to the 1/4" roundbar.  I managed to blend it in pretty well, although I was expecting it to be crazy hard before I began.  (actually it was.  I burnt through numerous times and had to fill and grind) Attached Images"A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:You can't roll that way bruddaYou have to have the stock cut to length which includes the "Flats" at each end.Example: 6" Ring  Circumference = 18.84 then add however much material is taken up by the Flat at each end by the type of roller you are using.Inch or 2 for this HF roller- can't remember exactlySo if it is 2" then the stock is cut to 22.84"Place the stock in the roller like in the Photo, apply a little pressure, roll through one way till you reach the "Flat", apply pressure, roll it back.Repeat until you have the ring size. Towards the end you'll have to nudge the ends so the flats over lap until the "Flats" match up. remove and cut the flats off.It should roll just fine- but for me, too much work for rings outta 1/4" since I can bend 1/4" around a piece of Pipe in about 2 secs.
