Hey I'm sure there's gonna be some joker that says to use the search button but that would defeat the purpose of me introducing myself. I'm a first year welding student in college and today was my first weld day from there I have a few questions.Oxy-Acetylene1.) I can puddle good and keep a good flow until the end, Is there a technique out there that doesn't get the metal so hot towards the end of the weld? 2.) After a few welds it's hard to keep a steady hand with the rod, is there any way to correct this? Any other tips that would help me would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Reply:Are you sure there is an unknown? I will not comment on oxy fuel welding, but the increase in heat is a common phenomena in virtually all processes. It is gonna be getting hotter unless you keep your travel speed up. When it gets too hot, you just have to remove the heat source and let it cool before it melts completely. Less heat input has the same effect as faster travel speed, you might try turning down the heat or weld a section at a time to keep it cooler.City of L.A. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Turn the torch down a little.  The puddle will cool while  you are doing it.  You gotta have the heat right no matter what you are welding. My son went to vocational school yesterday.  His first day of welding class.  He had a new auto darkening helmet with flames on it (harbor freight) and a broken in set of gloves.  I'll get him a miller elite for his birthday or something. We need pics.... Show us your stuff!DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Cool appreciate all that. Next week I'll get some of my work up here and you guys can critique me. Also I have a "to do" list of welds that I need to get done for the class by the end of the semester. So I might just stick around and be a sponge around here. Thanks again.

Reply:Holding the torch back does make things cooler, but it doesn't melt the filler as well, you need the tip of the cone in the flame.  That is why  I turn it down.  Both ways work.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
