Anyone ever try this? Ive seen this on tv too!http://www.ehow.com/how_9130_remove-rust-using.html
Reply:I've never tried aluminum foil but I've removed a bunch of rust with electrolysis using a battery charger for the electrical power. Works good.
Reply:http://www.instructables.com/id/Elec...val-aka-Magic/ works nicely for smaller parts. I have also heard of people using swimming pools for large items, such as vehicle frames....not that I would use a pool for that, but it is doable.Electrolysis, as it is known, is a well known rust removal method.
Reply:Dunno about the alum. foil thing.  I suppose it works, but you could rub the rust with a soft towel, and eventually the rust would come off (be an old man by the time it works though)  Seems that it's just a mildly abrasive sanding media.Isn't the electrolysis thing the same as they used to do to a radiator in the old days when they were still made of copper and brass.  I think I remeber them calling "roding" or "rotting", can't remember which."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Im sorry for being soo STUPIED!!!! Thats the wrong link!!! i MENT THIS ONE!!!! Sorry guys!http://www.thepontiactransampage.com/rust.html
Reply:They say to use baking soda, but i herd to use arm&hammer super washing soda. Which is better.
Reply:I think you get a better reaction if you use carbonate of soda rather than the bi-carbonate which is in A&H baking soda. Carbonate is used in the cheap laundry powder as a brightener. Seems like I used Gain or All powder. Cheaper it is the more likely you'll find it. Just have to check the label for the contents. If you can find Red Devil Lye anywhere, throw it in the mix and all the paint and stuff will just fall off of whatever your "de-rusting". Meth heads have just about killed the market for lye.  Electrolysis is really is a cool thing to do and beats heck out of a sander or grinder. No damage whatsoever to the metal.
Reply:Yea. Should i run my charger on 6v or 12v? I read to use 6v over 12v? Any reason why?
Reply:I aways ran mine on 12v but six would work. You don't really need over 10amps though. I think my charger put out 12 for some reason and it worked fine. The key is to be patient. It's a slow process. If you have big rusty pieces you'll probably have to take them out about once a day, wash them off and put them back in. When you do that it's a good idea to check your metal anodes, they may need cleaning too. The cleaner they are the better the process will work. You'll probably get a layer of scum on top. Every now and then brush it aside to make sure you still have a small bubbling action going.  That's the process you're looking for. Have fun. I did just about a whole tractor.
Reply:The Hobart sight has a good write up on rust removal, here is a link http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...ad.php?t=28883scroll down to post 7 and 8Ed
Reply:Good article! One last thing. The stuff is completely biodegradable even if you put lye in it. So when you're done dump it on your lawn. The grass will green up. If you use lye in the solution put it on those ant beds that are driving you crazy. Not one will survive.
Reply:Did you catch in the original link that the guy recommends stainless steel?  The Hobart site link is pretty clear that using stainless is a VERY bad and very toxic idea.
Reply:If the post on the Hobart site refers to the post that hexavalent chromium cannot be precipitated, only trivalent chromium, the poster was in error.Hexavalent chromium is readily precipitated by iron pentate or iron phosphate.  As are most metals.  Best regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional

Reply:Yea the store didint have the a&m super washing soda and i forgot to check the labels on other brands!!!! Il'l have too check again for somthing with carbonate in it.
Reply:I have been doing this for years.  It works great.  But yes it is very very slow.   Super washing soda works the best.  1 cup to every 4 gallons is the best mix I found.  I had a 12 by 12 1/8 plate in my 35 gallon tank.   It would do a set of john deere garden tractor rims in about a week.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
