powcon 300st

i was just wondering what everyone's opinion was of a powcon 300 st. it is stick and tig with the built in solenoid.

Reply:Never used a 300st but the ones I have (sm models) are the best welders available for the buck. Maybe some of the best anywhere. Reply:I have used the ST.  It worked pretty well, in my opinion.  I was only doing some test runs on some scrap stainless, but the cap. start worked just fine.  I have both the SM and SS.  They are often a lot of machine for the dollar in used condition.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I used them when I was in the Navy. They worked well. The remote hand controls were the only problem I had. They had a little "springback" if you turned off to hard and if you were wrapped around a pipe or two welding and told your welding partner (down and out) sometime the remote would turn tha power back on to the tig rig and let me tell you, hot tugnsten, argon still flowin, THAT arc could jump. And if it gets on you, it is quite interesting. Its NOT your normal welding machine shock.I used the same machine for weling .100 beveled canopy seals and for arc gouging . We had a rep come to Scotland one when the company was in Tempe Arizona and leave a machine dead shorted overnight. It worked fine the next day.The other thing that was odd was the squeal. Reply:a 300ST was my first tig welder - worked great!  I love the squeal it makes...  I still have it and used it last week for stick practice.
Reply:i picked it up tonight got it off ebay. i used it and it works great makes me look like a better stick welder than i really am. i too heard the squeal and was worried until i remembered about the post about it so i figure it is ok. thanks for the replies.
Reply:That squeal is the sound that the SCR's make in normal operation.  I think it's a pretty cool sound, and it's funny how the pitch is different in each range.  Low range is really high pitched, and high range just sounds dangerous....
Reply:If I wanted to use it to tig with where can i buy a torch. the guy i bought it from said they dont make the connectors anymore and that i would have to make my own on a lathe. i thought a two piece torch with the tweco connectors would work just fine, but i am not sure. i would like to know before i order one so i get the right one. thanks
