OK, I've been welding for years but have never done any auto work. What precautions need to be made before welding on a car/truck? I'll be welding mostly underneath the vehicle. There IS fuel in the tank, fuel lines, etc... I take it the ground should be placed close to the work, and never have the circuit pass near the gas tank, correct? I've always wonderered if the current passes through any tank/lines that have fuel, if that charge could cause an explosion. I'd prefer the gas tank to NOT explode while I'm welding near it Do I need to disconnect the battery leads? (will this protect the electrical system?)Thanks in advance!!"A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:Disconnecting the ground cable from the battery is a good precaution with newer cars. This shields the electronics in the car from power surges. Keeping the ground close as practical to your welding is always good practice.Be aware of what's on the other side of your weld. It's not hard to set fire to the carpet and lining inside a car while welding on the underbody.Like any other confined space, beware of the potential for fire and have a means to escape from under the car should the worst happen. Might not be a bad idea to have a partner standing by to help out...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Yes, unhook the battery and also fill the tak with gas. Not to the point of running over but that way it cant blow up. I am a frame welder. And have streched lots of trucks always on a full tank. |
