Hi guys...looking for some more knowledge here. My Miller manual states bevels should be cut with O2/Acet but grinders may also be used. What do you fellows prefer?
Reply:Depends on material thickness. 1/4" and under, I'll usually use a grinder. Above that, I'll use O/A or Plasma. If I bevel with O/A, I always clean it up with a grinder.
Reply:If there's a lot of material to remove, torch it. Most stuff I do isn't too thick, generally around 1/2 and I usually just grind it. Grinding builds character"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:At school we run 2 track cutters to cut bevels. If they are being used I will hand cut. As paweldor said anything 1/4" and under id just grind. I grind them whether I use the track cutter or cut by hand (just to grind down a land and knock slag off).
Reply:you're going to have to grind it whether you torch it or not, but I would definitely say torch it first!try to set up an angle iron or something as a straight edge and drag the torch against it so your cuts come out better.
Reply:If you cut it with a plasma, a grinder isn't needed. If you hit the slag with a hammer right where it meets the base plate, it comes right off. I use what ever is easiest.Farmersam, I may have enough character The metal heavy duty 7" grinder I bought 20 years ago is getting heavier. Its a Black and Decker Wildcat.
