I just had to ask because I like to think it hurts them...  I'm talking about flys and mosquitoes here.  Seeing as how flys have so many eyes, I was wondering if anybody knows if a weld-arc hurts them in any way.    A fly just happened to land on my Railroad Baseplate Work Bench right before I struck the arc about 10 inches away.  The fly left for a split second; but when he landed again, he couldn't see the rod as I struck another arc right next to him.  I was just being mean; but there are so many of them in this area this year, I wanted to get rid of as many as I could.  They pester me to no end !  I realize this is kind of a waste of time question; but hey... I'm sure none of us works 100% of the time.  We all need a break, and a little mind game now and then.  Thanks !  Ed VA

Reply:Every time I've noticed insects while welding, they get a little too close to the bright light and burn.  Even if I didn't see it, I'll smell it.
Reply:I am not that knowledgeable about flies and their sensitivity to light of various frequencies, but I can tell you that ants (probably the Argentinian variety) can't take too much sunlight. As a youngster, I occasionally observed them disappear when a small light beam happened upon them; I had a 6" magnifying lens. Your arc has much more UV light which is more capable of doing permanent damage to our eyes, so I would assume theirs would also be susceptible to such damage. Mosquitoes use their sense of 'smell' to find targets; they are supposed to be attracted to CO2, but don't seem to like tailpipes. Being smaller though, the IR and UV might affect their bodies more.Maybe you should apply for a Federal Grant to study this.
Reply:i don't know about blinding them but they like the light. i worked on a dry dock on the river 2 nd shift. bugs got so bad that when i struck an arc i could'nt even see the end of my rod or the puddle.  and of course you have the smell of burning bugs. we got 4 bug zappers but within 20 minutes they where clogged full. silver bugs and lady bugs. then about 2 times during the summer the may flies hatched. had to keep your mouth closed while walking around.  it was burn a rod, grab a new rod, wipe the bugs off and weld some more.

Reply:Hi...  I like that idea of applying for that grant.  The way our government spends/spent money or stupid crap, I'm sure they'd go for it.  Only thing is... I think someone has already done it.Ed VA"I'm not wrong... I've just found something else that didn't work." Reply:Good question Weldrwomn... maybe that's something else to apply for a grant to research.

Reply:Back in the early 80’s I was working deep space surveillance at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.   We had this bad a$$ medium powered laser for aligning optical junk.  We also had an ample supply of Ever Clear (200 proof alcohol) for cleaning optics.   Well you mix the two together and you are now shooting pesky flies.  The laser was just hot enough to completely blind the bug.  The critter would let out a loud buzz and fly around rapidly bouncing off walls and people.  This would go on for five minutes or so; then the bug would suddenly drop out of mid flight and land belly-up.
Reply:Another fella wanted to know if work is slowing down.  Yup, sure is.  We're responding to questions about bugs, ain't we?
