HI all I'am working on a smoker trailer. I took a 250 gal fuel oil tank and cut 18'' out of the middle to make it round, now I want to weld it back together. I don't know the best way to go about this. Cleco pins I think are for lap welds or over laying and pop riveting?? The tank is 5' long and 2' high 14' total weld. I can't get inside to hold them flush. Maybe tac where they line up and then cut the doors in and do the rest. I;ve seem these Intergrips things the autoboby guys use to hold panels and butt weld , I have no idea if that the right name or if they would work on 0.0100 or close to 12 ga.give or take a ga.Any ideas thanks Daye
Reply:If you use enough of those butt weld clamp it would be ok. I'd just use blocks and wedges to line it up and make a tack. Check alignment and make another tack. When you have 4 tack in it it wiull stay in place.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:One of the things we old timers do is "use the dog". Nothing more than a piece of angle iron tack welded to the "low" side, then use a bar to push against the "high" side to push it in alignment with the low side, tack, and move on.Because thinner metal will warp like crazy, weld it using the "back step" method. This is accomplished by starting your weld ahead of the last placed weld and welding "back" to the end of the last weld. I normally use 2 - 4" increments when I do this. It won't eliminate all warpage, but it sure helps. |
