Yesterday I was welding aluminum with my Miller Elite auto darkening helmet for the first time and the helmet would shut off (undarken, w/e you wanna call it) while I was in the middle of a weld, but only for a split second and then it would come back on. This happened a few times, but only when I was welding aluminum, tigging steel is fine. So, is there any reason for this happening? Also, I'm looking into getting a gold plated lens for my fixed helmet. I've heard good and bad things so I don't know if I should get one or not. Opinions?
Reply:Turn the speed down to a little slower and it should stop that. OR turn the sensitivity up.You won't mess with a gold lens once you have used the auto darkening.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Were you possibly blocking the sensors? I've had that happen more than once. Welding in an odd position, where something is in between the arc and your helmet will do it.If I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself
Reply:Be any chance is the battery going dead?
Reply:The gold-plated lens works by reflecting all the light colors to about the same degree, and still adsorbs/reflects the uv. Thus, the view you see will be a more normal color than with the colored lenses. That can sometimes, I've found, make it harder to see what is happening where more contrast is needed between the puddle and surrounding, but usually it is better. I use both types on occasion, but now usually use the automatic darkening hood. The answers above cover the other question pretty well.
